I'm currently deciding between the two models and want to make sure that I got the basic differences and didn't miss something.

So the iPhone X:
Slightly better camera (OIS on both cameras and slightly better aperture (about 0.2))
OLED Display with HDR, etc. with notch
FaceID instead of touchID

Is it also true that the notch as it is can interfere with the screen contents unless there are updates to accommodate this?

Right now the OLED display and camera are what are making me consider the iPhone X, but the notch, faceID and price are making me consider the iphone 8 plus instead.

update:
So other differences I missed were:
X Screen size (although the aspect ratio makes it taller but narrower than plus(?))
The camera Aperture is 0.4 in the difference, not 0.2.
8 Plus has slightly longer usage time (about an hour)

I think the camera difference is probably pretty negligible. Main advantages of the X in my opinion are the display and smaller form factor. Advantages of the 8 Plus are TouchID, and price.

I'm also having a tough time deciding.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the X have only a slightly improved battery over the 7, but the 8+ will have a almost double battery life compared the the X?

Almost double?! According to the stats on Apple's site, the 8+ gets about 1 hour longer than the X for web surfing and/or video playback. If it was double, that would be insane!

The X has a narrower screen in portrait mode which will make content look smaller.

This is something that people have to consider as well, especially those coming from a Plus sized phone. Although the X's screen has a larger total area, the narrower aspect ratio will likely make it feel smaller, but of course, it will fit much more comfortably in your hand or pocket.

The iPhone 7's battery is 1,960 mAh
the Iphone 7 Plus has a 2900mAh

It's really only an extra hour of battery? I thought it was more than that.

Have we seen any specs on the new battery for the X yet?

I was leaning towards the Iphone 8+ coming from a 7+, now I wonder if I should wait for the X, I thought the battery was closer to half the battery of the plus.

You forgot to mention the X is practically bezel less compared to the 8 plus that still has the 2 bezels on the top and bottom. I've been waiting for years for Apple to get rid of those huge ugly bezels. I can't wait to get my hands on the X!

Wait, now you're comparing the 7 and 7 Plus? You said that the 8 Plus was double the X...

If you're comparing a 7 to a 7 Plus, or an 8 to 8 Plus, you have to remember that the thing that eats the most power is the screen, so the bigger battery also has to power a bigger screen. I still don't believe that any Plus model gives DOUBLE the battery life of its smaller counterpart.

I like the bezel-less design for practical reasons, ie. fits in hands and pockets better, but I really don't get why people complain about the bezels being "ugly". I actually wouldn't complain about some bottom bezel if it allowed for a home button/Touch ID.

If you thing that aperture is negligible your not a photographer lol, it's signifigent
In terms of lenses that much change can add thousands of dollars to a lens

The 8 and 8 Plus have most of what the X has. I'm impressed with the new phones. The 8 and 8 Plus have nice improvements over the 7 and 7 Plus. The X is nice, but I wouldn't pay $200 more just for edge to edge oled screen, better camera, and animoji. This article might help some with decision making.

I agree the 8 is a decent phone.

I'm not a photographer. Most people aren't. Most people, like me, take pictures to share on Facebook or Instagram, not for a gallery or publication, and no one is analyzing them close enough to discern the differences between smartphone cameras. I currently have a 6, with its 8MP camera and whatever aperture it has, and under most conditions the pics don't look that different to a layperson than pics taken on a 2017 phone.

So to me, the camera difference between the 8 Plus and X is not a relevant factor. Either is an upgrade over what I currently have, which still isn't even bad.

It's not that technical though, the lower aperture even by that seemingly little amount means it lets more light in to the sensor. Light is everything

I'm sure you'd rather have Better low light photos and better background blur (bokeh)

To put it into perspective a lens with aperture as low as .95 down only .405 can be 10,000

I didn't say it was hard to understand, I just said that when all you do is post pics on social media the difference in quality isn't that big a deal to most people, if they notice it at all.

The 8+ is enough of an upgrade over my 6S+ camera wise and the extra features of the X camera certainly isn't worth its silly price.

I think Apple has folks really drinking the tea when it comes to the X. I was super hyped up about it when it was first announced and then start to sit back and really look at the differences and they are so minimal. Yeah sure it looks good but to someone like myself who has the S8 and the Note 8 I'm like blah, we been had no bezels and a high quality screen.

The price difference between the 2 isn't worth it and to me the 8 is the better buy IMO.

The X has a narrow skinny screen. It crops photos and videos in the full screen mode. I'd rather have the wider screen of the 8 Plus. The X is 5.8" on a diagonal measurement, but really is kinda thin and tall. It reminds me of the jump from the 3.5" iPhone 4s to the 4" iPhone 5. The screen was larger, but just taller.

Prior to the announcement the polls here showed like 98% of people preferring the X over the 8/8 Plus. I wonder what those numbers would look like now...

So far, I'm leaning more toward the plus model over the X.

Thinking about the display on the X, I'm wondering if based on my past usage I would really take advantage of it (I mainly watch films on my ipad with the odd exception, so day to day use takes priority) and that would just leave the camera which I'm not sure is worth the extra money.

Plus with the money saved I could get Apple Care or some other kind of insurance.

update:

Went with the 8 Plus 256GB.
