If you immediately spend the $175 on the early termination fee, it's still cheaper than the old one and then you don't have to pay for two plans.
we are doomed to the desire to kill ourselves on release date, 10 minute activation per phone, great, except when there are 150 people in line and only 10-15 employees

From that ATT memo there is this, so maybe itunes activation will be allowed:
"Apple stores will also perform this tether process, however in the event that a customer's device is not tethered in the Apple store, their device will be inoperable until they get home and tether through iTunes. Prepaid and Pick Your Plan will not be allowed on the 3G device."
