Are we expecting iOS 5.1 beta 4/ GM this week? Can't wait to discover the new changes !
nobody knows for sure when apple will release new betas or gm.. but i doubt it will be released today or even this week. things have been quiet lately.
5.1 Beta 3 was released on Jan 9th. Almost 30 days ago. I thought the whole delta updating system was supposed to allow them to push out smaller more incremental updates at a faster pace. It seemed like we were getting much quicker updates with 4.x.
It also makes me wonder how much could honestly change if a version 6.0 is to be released a rumored 5 months from now...
Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)
Beta 1 - November 28
Beta 2 - December 12
Beta 3 - January 9
Looks like they are waiting on the iPad in March.
Beta 3 is a disaster. There's a bug that makes the 3G signal drop out for ~5 seconds and it happens so often that almost every time I try to load a webpage/update twitter/send an iMessage, it fails and I have to retry. Beta 4 can't come soon enough.
Apple has only ever really updated iOS out of necessity.
iOS 5.1 supports 8 different devices (possibly more that haven't been released yet) and so it's not all that simple for Apple to release even a small update.
They have hundreds of millions of users to consider as well.
and theres the lovely bug which makes music tracks skip like a cd thats been nocked.....roll on beta 4
When I receive calls from people in my phonebook or people who have name display enabled (we have call display with name display on Rogers/Fido) I cannot hang up the call after its over. I have to restart my phone. Totally bogus. This has happened on this and the previous beta.
It does, and it has.
When the remote code flaw that app developers could exploit was discovered back around November, it only took Apple 4 days to push out an OTA update.
Freaking awesome, since when in history have we had that kind of service from a mobile carrier/manufacturer. You sure as hell won't get it with an Android handset, with the exception of maybe Nexus.
Also... updates annoy the population at large. When my step mother got her iPad2 for Christmas, I helped her set it up, and one of the first things was an update to 5.0.1 or .2. She commented, "I hope this isn't something I have to do all the time.".
These are the bulk of Apple's customers, they'd be wise not to piss them off petty updates.
I'd agree that the old way of updating was annoying, because you had to plug in, and depending how much media is on your phone, the update could take hours.
With delta OTA updating, it really isn't annoying at all. I'd gladly do an update every day as long as they are fixing bugs!
Or maybe intentional to cut 3G power to save battery
Still no sign of the new release ... Beta 3 is way too buggy :-(
Still completely stable on my iPad 1. My iPhone is currently on 5.0.1 though due to jailbreaking.
Beta 3's 3G reception is really bad on my iPhone 4S
How was it on 5.0.1? Perhaps you should consider reverting back for the time being if you are done testing your app.
They'll release the GM on the day of the iPad 3 announcement (March 7th). Don't expect anything till then.
Same Issue on 4s But Not 4!
I'm having the same issue on my iPhone 4s but not on iPhone 4, both on Rogers and the only way to get the phone to work again is to end the program or reboot.
I'm a software tester and it AMAZES me that something like this would not have been caught prior to releasing Beta 1!
It's clear that Apple will wait for ipad to launch a new OS version. Expect nothing till there...
100% agree. And to not have caught it after the first beta and fixed it.
