Someone wasn't around for the original iPhone price cut.

Yeah because Jobs realised the original iPhone was overpriced. Just like the original MBA was. But that's the exception not the norm and unless Apple really misjudged Watch and bungles the pricing there won't be discounting (unless they allow 3rd party retailers to do it).

Aluminium is a lot easier to machine than Stainless Steel.

Indeed.

We have just started a large new job at my works based on Aluminium.
It's really swings and roundabouts. Each metal has it's pro's and con's.

Aluminium is actually quite an abrasive metal, but it's easy to quickly hog out large areas. Modern carbide cutting tools, with special geometries and coatings can do very very well on much harder metals also.

We worth with both very high grade surgical Stainless Steel and Titanium all day long also.
Titanium, cuts really nicely on machines as it chips away very cleanly.

In reality, unless you are talking precious metals, there is not going to be a MOUNTAIN of difference in the raw material or machining costs of these metals.
There is a difference, but, when compared to end mark up/profits, they will pretty much pale into nothing.

For the body I'm speaking about, and as I say, not the precious metals that have a far far higher raw material cost.

Like buying a pack of screws for home, perhaps 50 cents for rusty steel ones, or 2 dollars for nice stainless steel ones, ok it's 4x the price, but it's still chicken feed.

True, keep in mind I was quickly responding (was heading out the door to run) to XboxEvolved's post that basically was implying that the aWatch as a dead end tech. Also I did say "..next few years..." too.;)

Ah, gotcha. I have been contemplating creating a new post about this but I'll just go ahead and say it now. The more I think about it, the more I realize that the Apple watch just isn't for me. Until recently, I didn't think there would be any smart watch other than the Apple watch for me because, well, it's Apple. They could sell me a rock with the shiny apple logo to be honest with you, but this generation seemingly isn't going to do it for me. I just saw the fit bit surge at target and I really think this is the watch I will be purchasing. It blows my mind to hear myself say it out loud (Siri) but it just seems so much more practical (for me, anyway). You can submerge it and it gets a week of battery life. I'd love to have the Apple watch integrated into my Apple ecosystem, but I just can't… Not yet anyway.

Its funny how the :apple:Watch has made even hard core Apple fans consider whether they actually need a product that Apple has created. Because I run a youtube channel, I will buy the :apple:Watch so I can get a lot of good coverage out on launch day, which will be great for exposure for my channel. And I am extremely interested in what the :apple:Watch will be like, so I definitely will get one on launch day. But how I actually like it, and how useful it actually is for me, I'll find out when I get it. I just got the Pebble Watch yesterday, and it is very convenient to get notified of what is going on with your iPhone. I do find myself wishing I could reply from the watch, or choose and play music from the watch. That is why I still will get the :apple:Watch, bc I still want a bit more functionality.

I still believe a BIG part of the problem is that, at it's root, the Apple watch is, not that far away from a dumb screen that displays data from the iPhone you are forced to carry also.

I know it does a few little bits on it's own, but I believe a lot of Apple's plans are that the phone does the work and the Watch is just a small secondary display device on your wrist.

For me, anyway, this is a killer negative point.

Perhaps, and I hope, in time this will change.
But can you imagine an iPhone that needed you to carry a MacBook for the iPhone to be able to do almost anything worthwhile? No.....

Myself, I'd want to see the Watch as a totally independent device.
So I can leave the phone, ANY phone, at home, and just go about my business, with the watch only.

That means, YES, the watch has to be a phone.

And yes, that would make it limited. It would be not as good a phone as an actual phone, and it would be not as easy to type on it, as the phone.

But then the phone is not as good as a MacBook, and the MacBook is not as good as an iMac.

You pay a little price for each step down in size and power you make, but it still works.

As I say, I'd want to see the Watch be it's own thing.

Actually, I feel this IS going to be part of the problem.
Most people can pull the phone out their pocket in literally 2 to 3 seconds.

And if you can do that, AND have a better experience on the phone you HAVE to carry. Screen size, Camera, Typing, Speed, etc, etc
Then why bother with the watch on your wrist?
