Since I'm a broke college student, even though I want the latest and greatest I usually can't. sigh. I just love apple products and electronics. Whenever I think about my dream house, I only think about the gadgets that I'm going to put in each room, etc.

However, I swear, once cash start flowing in my bank accounts, I WILL have the latest and greatest.

Well, seeing I'm 14, I obviously don't have a lot of cash flow...

But, I like to have the latest and greatest, but I usually can't.

So far though, I own two computers that are exclusively mine...

A MacBook and a piece of crap Dell.

Wow... I have a piece of crap Dell Too!!! Yeah, I didn't list it below! I pull it out for certain PC tasks. I REFUSE to load Microsnore stuff on my MACs.

For me it's all about price/performance and cost/benefit. I have yet to take the plunge and switch to intel; I'm waiting for the Montevina MBP's later this summer.

Every manufacturer, Apple included, historically has models that are great, and models that were turds. Powerbook G3 Pismo was a "great" and folks held on to them for many years. Powerbook 5300 was a "turd", and folks ditched them as quick as possible.

I think my PB G4 is a "great" as evidenced by it's $1000 price tag for clean used ones on ebay, despite the fact that it's 2 1/2 years old now.

So in summary, I suppose it depends on the machine. No one has a crystal ball, but I'd keep a "great" machine for several years before upgrading, while I wouldn't hesitate to ditch a "turd" machine as soon as the next newer one comes out.

Same here. I use mine as a iTunes server and for the random PC stuff I sometimes need to do. I guess I can't call it crap though if it's doing what I need it to (which happens to be very little).

It would probably better if I maxed it out at 2GB of RAM and got it a new video card, but I don't feel like putting money into it. :apple:

Why do all you people own Dells if you hate them so much? I've never owned any product made by Dell so I can't comment on the quality, but everyone here seems to hate them - so why'd you buy it then?

Well, at the time of me purchasing it, it was a good computer. But, after going though 2 years of hell with it crashing, having hardware problems, and having to call tech-support, you begin to dislike them. But, as a secondary computer, it makes a good iTunes server.

I usually rarely kept anything for more than 6 months because as soon as something new comes out i sell the old one and get the new one with little loss (if any) and have been efficient in doing so

However, of recent, i still have the same iMac almost a year later and haven't upgraded to the penryn models which is what i would've done normally. Also i don't plan on selling my iPhone 1 either, because i don't plan on buying the new 3G model. If anything i might get a blackberry bold but even thats unlikely, im just happy with my current phone.

I guess i'm either getting older or there's just a lesser incentive to upgrade these days. *shrugs* Go figure.

I mainly use it for my Napster membership for the unlimited downloads, then I convert them so that I can copy them to my iTunes library on my MacBook. That way I get unlimited music for 12.95 a month... otherwise you have to pay for each song/album.

With Macs, I tend to keep the same one for a long time. I got my MacBook in early February, and I expect that it will be my main machine for at least two years. Before that, I had the first model of 12" PowerBook which is now over 5 years old and has never had any hardware problems.

However, when it comes to iPods, I tend to buy at least 2 new ones every year, but never sell them, starting with the 6GB 2G mini, then the 30GB 5G, the 1GB shuffle, the 8GB 2G nano, the 1GB 2G shuffle, and most recently the 8GB 3G nano. I'm now waiting to see how much the iPhone will cost on Pay As You Go, but if it is too much I will probably just go for the 32GB touch.

I used to buy the latest and greatest all of the time. I guess in my old age I'm starting to not want to spend so much money. I bought my MBP last march, and will keep it until it dies. I have an 30GB iPod photo that I will keep. I don't use it at all so there is no justification on getting a new iPod. Even when I have a lot of disposable income, I don't like spending it. Just save for retirement.

At home I have:

iMac G3 Snow
iBook G4
PowerMac Dual-G4 Mirror-door

Guess which group I belong to!

At work:

MacBook Pro Core Duo

I'm a little of both. I'm always looking for upgrades, but I keep my machines for quite a while. I guess the catch is that I'm generally at least 3-4 generations behind the latest releases. I buy everything either used or refurbished. I just don't see the need to buy at full price, when slightly older and way cheaper fits my needs just fine.

Last year, I bought, sold, and gave away far too much gear. So now I'm working on discipline in terms of sticking to one computer.

Ideally, I'll keep my Macbook for seven years or until it breaks down; whichever occurs first. Trying to become more responsible with money.

I bought my iPod about a year ago, too, and I hope to keep that until the battery dips below the amount necessary to get me through a day's listening.

When that happens, I'll try to replace the battery instead of buying a new iPod outright. We'll see. In general, I hope to keep it for seven years as well.

I keep mine, 'till death do us part. And even then when they are not fixable, they always have uses, like modern art, or doorstops, or whatever. I just can't get rid of them... though I like having the greatest and the best, it's too expensive. And I'd keep the compys when they weren't the greatest anyway. :p

I plan to keep my MacBook Pro until it dies. The price of new hardware is extremely steep when the machine and home still runs great.
