Im looking at the full keynote now on the apple tv iTunes podcast

They mentioned what the ios 5 does for for the ipad/ipod/ipod nano and iPhone but nothing for the current apple tv 2

They mentioned AirPlay a lot and showed off new menus for purchased iCloud TV Shows.

It got more mentions in this keynote than it has in a long time. At least it exists in Apple's product lineup now.

So the one thing totally meant to interact with an HDMI TV is going to be the only Apple product not capable of 1080p and without an A5 chip? Wow, that's a real disappointment to me. I've been waiting to get one and no ATV for 2011 blows🙁

I keep holding out hope that one day before Christmas it just shows up like the AE5 did. If not, Apple is falling behind on this one

How much 1080p content do you own that you can't already watch on a Blu-ray player? I have to question whether or not the ATV is really the product for you.

Although you CAN play back ripped files from your Mac or PC, it's not really what the ATV is about. It's about streaming.

Actually since the iPod Touch didn't get the A5 either, I wouldn't call the A5 the norm. Right now the "low" end products (i.e. iPod Touch and AppleTV) appear to get the A4 and all the "high end" productions (i.e. iPhone and iPad) are getting the A5. I am sure a lot of this has to do with output. Suppliers can only build so many chips at any given time. Apple has "coincidentally" spaced out these two major "hogs" of the A5 by roughly 6 months. SO as interest in one product wanes, they can move the A# production to the next product. Meanwhile the "also rans" of the Apple iPod Touch and the AppleTV are going to get the left over chips from last years A# until that supply dries up and/or the iPhone and iPad transition to an even newer chip.

I think this is what we will see going forward. Based on this, I would guess the A5 will show up in the iPod Touch and the Apple TV next year (after the iPad and iPhone have moved to the A6).

Seems especially disappointing given the difference in cost between putting in an A4 vs putting in an A5: $6 in parts.

And that was back in March given by isuppli. Price may have come down by now. In addition, it could use some more RAM and flash memory, but it's just oh-so-close. But not *quite*.

I'm hoping it's just a supply issue and it will come around January.

Why am I against 1080p just because I say "don't expect the current ATV2 to get 1080p with a firmware update"?

I'm being practical. We won't get 1080p output on an ATV until the A5 chip appears in one. And I'm betting that Apple won't send someone to each and every one of our houses to swap out for an A5 free of charge, either.
