I probably will end up getting it. It may only take $20 to connect your Macbook (Pro) to the TV, true, but it is not like your Macbook has a huge hard drive to store that many video files.

It is that Mac Mini that is in your basement/study/kids' room that will have all the loot, and that's the one that you will want to hook wirelessly to your TV.

Well - I would get one, if the iTunes Canada store were to add television shows to its products.

I did want one, but looking at the features, I think that I'll just convert the P3 Desktop I've got sitting a closet into a streaming media box. Throw in a USB 2.0 card, connect it up to the TV, and I imagine it'll do wonders (a 1 Ghz P3 with 768 Megs of Ram should work for that, shouldn't it?).

Does anyone else think it is likely that Apple will port Front Row to Windows in an effort to sell more units of iTVs?

Why would that sell more iTV's?

And, basically, no - the Media Centre features of Vista (which I use on my PC) are broadly similar too (perhaps suspiciously similar...) Front Row. Of course, I miss my little remote that came with my MacBook but, oh well.

The same reason why we have iTunes on Windows now.

Else how many of these iTVs do you expect Apple to sell? If they are only targetted at Mac users, it won't be very many.

By the end of the day my MacBook will have a nice 160GB HD just as big as the biggest MacMini Drive. :p

Item Description Quantity
22-145-113 NBHD 160G|HITC 5K 8M SATA 0A28844 1

I see what you mean. I guess it's kinda cool for a not so mobile desktop, just not for me.

Well you forgot that a static desktop probably has lots of firewire drives hooked up to it :)

Perhaps they feel those who don't care should have the option to express that so they could prove how silly we all are to have an opinion whilst making an amusing mockery of themselves for such hypocritical folly. Thats geek entertainment for you...

I've said this in a few other threads. I would get one if and only if it lets me import, store, organize, browse, and play my DVD collection just the way that iTunes/iPod does for my CD collection. I want those discs to go in storage next to the boxes of CDs. And I want viewing my legally purchased content to be as easy as using my DVR to watch TV programs.

Ever since iTunes made music listening so much easier, and then the DVR made TV watching so much easier, I never watch DVDs anymore. Too much hassle. iTV needs to make DVD watching just as easy. I'll be first in line if it does.

Oh, and they need to add S-video output. I'm not ready to blow a huge wad of money on an HDTV just yet.

Same here. Until I can just put a DVD into my Mac, open iTunes and click 'Import', like I would for a CD, this whole idea of computers (be it Apple or Microsoft) as the centre of the home multimedia is a folly and wont get off the ground. Of course there are workarounds, like using MacTheRipper & Handbrake then adding to iTunes library and edit the tags yourself, I don't think the mainstream will buy into anything that is more complicated than the one-click solution that currently exists for digital music.

Of course the film companies are ensuring that this is a distant dream.

I mean, I don't think that Front Row and the iTV are connected. The OS for the iTV will be contained on the box - it will simply stream data from the TV.

It's biggest advantage, I'm predicting in advance, is going to be Wireless-N and the ability to stream HDTV. Otherwise, what's the point? I've got an old P3 which can act as a streaming media centre.

..I'm not getting one until we can replace the 20" CRT sitting beside my iMac. It has one speaker, no audio out, and one single coaxial input. And it's nearly (literally) split in half.

i will vote this poll 2 days from now, iTV has no detail yet, and nobody gonna committed to something before it come to reality. :p

i initially blew it off as a promotional tech display for apple. but the more i think about it, the more sense it makes. i don't have a dvd player, and every time i play a dvd it means hooking up my macbook to the tv. on top of that, i rarely have time to rent dvds the same day i watch them, so i usually wind up renting 5 or so at a time, ripping them, and then watching them over the next month or so. And my wife, japanese, downloads gigs of japanese tv dramas and primetime tv that, again, means hooking up the macbook to the tv.

interestingly, i can't remember the last time i actually watched a cable program in its entirety. and the only show we DO watch on cable, grey's anatomy, is usually over by time we get home so we just end up buying the damn thing off itunes, and, again, hooking up to the tv.

So i guess i fall squarely into apple's target market here. but only if it's available for $149, tops.

it isn't THAT hard to plug in a couple cables.

I'm still thinking about it :( It'd save me a couple hundred bucks, since I intend to buy a Mac mini unless the iTV's features are sufficient.

I could spend that money on putting a RAID card and drives in this old Power Mac...

I just hope they will have some available way to output composite video.

So did anyone change their mind? I didn't, no AppleTV for me. Looks like a product Apple is pushing just to get into the market, nothing groundbreaking here.

iTV as a wireless router?

Does anyone know if the Apple TV can be used as a wireless router? In other words, if I plugged my cable connection into it, would it share my internet connection with my computers and allow me to, simultaneously, stream content from those computers to my television? Thanks!

Cheers,
Bill

Most likely not as I rarely watch TV anymore..
There's been nothing but reruns of lousy shows all month. There isn't much to see on TV that's worth much as entertainment and certainly not worth the expense of this new gadget. I would hope Apple doesn't forget its roots and all the people who have supported him, and keep making great computers.;)

Nope.

Unfortunately I won't be buying it...can't download TV shows in Canada, no PVR, no DVD...it just doesn't seem to hit the mark.

Oh well, I guess I'll just get an iPhone...oh yeah, can't get those in Canada this year either :(

Boy, wasn't this a fun keynote.
