Happy with my maxed out 15" PB. Won't upgrade even if the new Intel Macs are out (Talking to myself "We'll see Eevee...")

Dual 2.7 on the way, baby! :D

didn't you say in your other thread 2.3GHz

anyway, whatever you get, lucky you. your thread made me look at a dual g5 2.3GHz about 247 times today at work.

ahh, forget about my rules from above.... can't resist any longer......must fight it.....

I have a Quicksilver and I'm getting an iBook because I need the portability. I don't care if it's not as fast as the quicksilver or if the dashboard ripples, I need to move around.

I would like more speed but I do not like the form factor of the current lineup of PowerBooks. I really like having two internal hard drives like I have in my PowerBook Pismo. I use one for my main drive and the other for backup. Every night the machine automatically backsup to the 2ndary drive. Weekly and monthly it makes backups to a network device.

Another thing I like about the Pismo is the plastic case. It feels better than the slick new metal cases and takes a lot more abuse. I've dropped this machine several times from chest height. By accident - I'm not a computer abuser! Not intentionally anyways! One time the machine was running. It didn't even hiccup. (I did! *gasp*)

I also really love being able to have two batteries for long trips (swap out the backup hard drive in the right bay, slip in another battery). This means with my three batteries I was able to get up to 15 hours of on the road time without needing a wall socket.

But, I would like more speed. My sons's new iMacG5 2.0GHz 20" screams. very fast. I would love that in a PowerBook, preferably dual-core and speed reduction for power savings. But, I don't want the power drain or heat. (Care too cook eggs! Actually, the iMacG5 isn't that hot. They would be a little runny. :) )

I would also like more RAM. Right now I only have 512MB of RAM. I had 1GB for a long time but the Pismo would overheat and turn on the fan in the summer a lot. With 512MB it rarely turns on the fan.

Lastly, I like the black case of the Pismo, not the silver or white of the newer machines. The black plastic case hides dings, scratches, finger prints, etc better.

I have two rules that have to appy before I upgrade:

1) System has been with me for at least 3 years
2) For a similar price as the original, I can get double the speed, RAM, etc. (this one is flexible of course)

Ha! Those are my rules as well. System needs to last at least three years and the new one needs to be at least twice as fast. It´s not always that I can keep up those principles unfortunately. My first computer already was outdated in about 18 months (cyrix 120 mhz) and with my recent switch to apple this march I replaced my three year old AMD 1.53 GHz Athlon for a 1.25 GHz G4 Mac Mini, so a sleek miniscule box instead of an ugly and large box that delivers roughly the same speed.
I never had an intel cpu out of principle so the switch still doesnt sit well with me at all. My original plan was to upgrade in three years time but now I think I will kling on to my first and last real macintosh for as long as possible. After that, who knows...I hope Steve Jobs will be fed up with Intel by the time I buy a new machine :D

I'm very happy with my iBook but I want/need a large screen to do my cartoons/drawings with. With that said I want to get an iMac since I really don't need the power that iGary (sort of like in Weird Science) needs :p
All I've ever done was to upgrade the ram in any of my macs.

My wife still uses an imac G3 233mhz rev A running 10.3.9 and I have a Powerbook G4 400mhz also running 10.3.9. I would like to get a new mac but I think I'm going to wait until the intel macs are released, I really love to play games (I also own a wintel pc just for games) and hope they will have dual boot capibilities.

I'm one of those who always wants the current latest and greatest, hence my current line up: Dual 2.5, new 23" display, 17" 1.33 Powerbook, 60GB iPod Photo.

I reckon this lot will keep me satisfied until the rev B Intel's. Apple's build quality has been pretty shoddy over the last few years, so I reckon it's best to get the rev A's out of the way and upgrade after that.
Hopefully my current line up will permit this (I'm 99.9% certain it will).

No I don´t need a more powerful computer than I have. I like my 2 macs and just hope they will last for some years...

i use a DP 1.8 G5, and i like it very much. I was kinda bummed with the GeForce 5200 video card, but i built a gaming computer, so that doesn't bother me any more. Id like my own mac. This G5 belongs to my family. I thought about buying a mini, but then decided i might as well build a computer for gaming. I'm in-between jobs at the moment, and would love a mac of my own. I REALLY want a powerbook. Or a Ibook if they made a 15" and it was in my price range. Like most people, i want it so i can move around. But as soon as i buy it (like most things i really want) i will become board with it after a while. So i dont know if i will ever buy a ibook, or a powerbook. Unless the clearance part of apple.com has a good deal on ibooks. They did when i bought my 15GB ipod. Paid 190 for it. Good buy IMO.

I'm so please with my iBook since switching a year ago I can't see upgrading for awhile. I always tended to wait too long on the windows based PCs, until it was so messed up and slow I couldn't even open two programs without some sort of crash.

I just wish my iBook had a higher resolution, that's really the only thing that might entice me to upgrade. Then I could pass this iBook on to my daughter and take the Compaq out and shoot it.

I've got a 1.8GHz G5 which is pretty damn fast for my uses but to be honest, I don't notice a massive speed difference in day-to-day tasks compared to my two year old G4 iBook.

I'm pretty happy with my Mac mini, but I can see myself getting either a new iBook/Powerbook in the next 12 - 16 months when I plan to do a masters degree so it will be useful for me to have the extra portability.

I still love the iMac - so if I suddenly find myself with some spare cash I could be tempted to sell the mini and get one of those as well!

i use a 1.25GHz powerbook for a protools music production, and that beauty runs on about 90% cpu load for 8 hours a day. i would very much like to use a fastest-mac-money-can-buy, but so far the money has been used to what affects the sound. oh well, maybe some day... :)

Would like to upgrade, but...

I have a G4-733 QS. 896MB Ram. 40Gig, 15in Cinema LCD.

I was going to pull the trigger on a new iMac just before WWDC. Decided then to wait until next year, until the Intel Macs come available. Now I'm struggling to decide what to do. I have no urgent need. Mostly run iTunes, sync my palm and ipod(s). I also house my digital pics so I run iPhoto.

My rule of thumb is to keep a system at least 2 years, 3 if possible, before upgrading or replacing. I usually hand down my systems to a family member.

If the new mini's came out with expanded video ram, I'd be sorely tempted to snag one. I also need a new display regardless as I am limited with my ADC 15" LCD.

I need a 2x faster portable mac, just to consider a possible change, I'm damn happy with my iBook, next mac to be a Powerbook!

Id want a higher resolution display in my 17inch powerbook also I wish that h264 1080p video would playback perfectly smooth and after installing final cut studio well 100 GBs hd doesn't cut it.
apart from that I'm happy

Well for the time being I'm very happy with my gear as it does everything I need it to do for right now.
I will however buy the last top of the line dual G5 before they change to Intel.

My main Mac that I use is my 15" Powerbook 1Ghz w/ 1 GB of ram and superdrive...it is now time for me to upgrade it because I have already filled the 60 GB hard drive and a 160 GB firewire hard drive on it. Also the 1 Ghz is now getting too slow for me and what I need it for. Right now it is at Apple because the 60 gb hard drive was failing.

I am using my 12" right now but I am hoping that they are going to come out with new Power Mac's soon because I need to order one.

Well, I only do basic internet, email, iPhoto so my Dual 1.8 is plenty fast for me. In fact, it's overkill but that's the way I like it. Who knows, I might dabble into video editing.

…Are you happy with your Mac or would you like something more powerful?…

Like most things in life what I’ve got will do all that I need it to do, but that doesn’t stop me wanting it to be better. I’ve got an iMac 17” which does everything I need and impresses most people who see it but, again as in life, I’d love an extra 3”. It wouldn’t do much more but I’d feel better and it’d impress the ladies.

Sold my PM G4 quicksilver 800MHz about 6 weeks ago for 600Euro and received my Dual G5 2.0 today!

I think if it doesn't break, I don't think I will ever need to replace it, speed was not the real issue, the quicksilver was just too loud. ( And the G5 is fast and quiet! ) Also I prefer PPC over Intel and will try to avoid switching as long as possible.

My Powerbook stil doing the job at nearly everything I throw at him. It's a Ti 1GHz, with superdrive, radeon 9000 64Mb, 768 Mb RAM, 60 Gb HD. My only concerne is the video card, I can't install Motion on this laptop, wich is a pain. The 60 Gb HD isn't large enough anymore, so I bought a 120 Gb external HD. One other thing, this machine is lacking USB 2.0. But it still being a great machine, not a speed deamon, but good enough at nearly everything.

I miss my old dual PM, but now I need a portable, dual was so fun, run many programme before you feel the slow down.

My own rule is to wait at least 2 years for each upgrade. As much as I like the constantly new machines released, I can't see a real reason (for me) to upgrade so frequently.
I bought an iMac 400MHz (SE DV) back in Jan. 2000.
In Nov. 2001, I bought an iBook 600MHz (G3).
Sometime in 2002, I sold my iMac to my brother for about $200.
My main computer was the iBook until November 2003, when I bought my 12" Powerbook (1GHz).
This past May, I finally got a new desktop machine - dual 2.3GHz G5, 2gb RAM (and still have my Powerbook as well).
I expect the G5 to last me at least 3-5 years, despite the worry of moving to Intel. As for the Powerbook, I will use it until I see a worthy replacement. The 1.67GHz Powerbook is very nice, but not nice enough to upgrade. Its speed is on par with mine (or... mine is on par with it).

Besides, the heaviest work I do is on Garageband. Until things start taxing my machine, I won't even think about buying. I'll just drool at the new specs.

I'm actually quite happy with the speed of my powerbook (1.25Ghz), but obviously any future speed boosts are welcome.

The only things I find disappointing are the battery life and running temperature. As they are now, they're just far too hot, or in the case of the battery ... not so hot

Wouldn't mind a 120 gig hard drive in it either
