I concur with that definition.

I am very blessed, have more than I need, and have healthy children. Do I need more? NO! Do I strive for more? YES! The most lucky thing to happen to me? Being born in the US of white parents who gave a crap about how I was raised and educated. That was pure luck!! Otherwise I keep an eye to the sky for falling pianos and anvils!!!:p

When I first posted this last night, half-asleep, I wasn't considering the wider definitions of "luck" - living in a relatively free society, with access to generally reasonable services (healthcare, food, water, etc.) and with a good social support structure. Heck, even to have time and ability to get on here to post the thread.

Yeah but most of the things we take for granted are just people not selfishly screwing us over. We don't have gangsters pretending to be leaders holding us in bondage forcing us to work slave hours for slave wages and then extorting most of that back out of us. We don't have people taking a dump in our drinking water because its more convenient. We don't have other thugs stealing seed corn and milk cows to eat for lunch.

Depends on your definitions, doesn't it?

emw, the same thing happened to our washing machine, and it happened to be while my mom was standing in front of it doing something else...talk about luck! Whole basement could have been flooded!

I completely agree with you, crdean1. I don't exactly believe in luck; I believe in God's blessings. Things like meeting my wife and having her in my life, being blessed with a child on the way, the job that I do have, etc. I guess really it all amounts to the fact that I believe luck involves some randomness, or chance, and I firmly believe that everything in my life happens for a reason. I can't say what that reason is, but that's how I feel.

So in response to the original question, no, I don't think I'm lucky, but I am blessed.

I guess "luck", as with anything, is relative. I take for granted the, for me, normal things like clean water, air conditioning in the summer, heat in the winter, etc.

Luck is represented by getting "extra" things that you didn't work for, I think. For me, it's being there when the water line breaks, or winning a raffle with a good prize. I suppose I'm fortunate to be able to have that relationship with luck.

I believe your meaning was quite clear. People were sort-of expanding the topic to discuss a sub-theme that was perhaps more in-line with how they view the concept of luck. My perception is that those things are some-what controllable factors. And what you were discussing was more in the totally unpredictable / unexpected or beyond your ability to influence. It's nice to know that some people (if not me) don't take things for granted. :)

I have great bad luck

Mr. Murphy and the Fates really dont like me. In major things I am neutral but little things like the bus leaving the stop just as you get there, something selling out just as you get to the store, trying to hold three coffee cups at the same time , ergh...

I am very lucky to be alive and in one piece...

- Near misses (Starched and Rotary Wing)

- Eye sliced in two

- Close calls climbing and parachuting

- Numerous broken/fractured bones
Don't forget eating raw food!

I was daydreaming while walking along in 1988, and almost got hit by a street car while crossing the street. It was coming fast, and luckily the driver blasted his horn and woke me up. I would've been sliced and diced if I'd ended up in front of that thing.

The pipes in upstairs flat we rent out, broke a couple days before we were to go on a 4-week vacation, and the house would've been empty for at least two of those weeks.

Lee and I went to a comedy show when I was in Chicago in February. They determined how much you pay to get into the show by rolling 2 dice and then subtracting 1 from the total. I told Lee, I will end up paying 11 dollars to get in. What do you know? 11 bucks it was. Lee, the little bastard, only had to pay a single dollar.
I had to pay $8 I think. I felt ripped off at that price; the show was horrible. It must have been a double slap in the face to pay $11.

Am I interpreting this wrong? People who have a skin color that is not white can be good parents.

NOOOOO....I'm not lucky at all, and even if something great happens, then the bad is right around the corner to counteract it (and that definitely goes for my life right now). But on the bright side, life could always BE worse I suppose, and at least I try to deal with what is thrown at me no matter how bad it feels inside...I just keep telling myself that I have to keep going even when I don't feel like it. Works for a little while.

Bottom line...I SO WISH I COULD GET LUCKY...just once, because I REALLY NEED A MIRACLE RIGHT NOW!!! :(

Always a dangerous thing to do! :)

Glad that you did not get hurt.

Thanks sushi. :) Weird to think about it now. Those street cars on tracks are dangerous because they can't swerve. And the whole concept was new to me, I had only been living in Norway for less than a year.

I call myself lucky, but I don't think it's because I'm particularly fortunate, in the sense of random events coming out in my favor more often than chance would predict.

I think it's a personality thing, and it probably is for other people too. When things are really left to chance, they sometimes work out and sometimes not, but being an optimist I tend to notice the lucky events more than the others. I'd probably claim I'm lucky to find a dime on the sidewalk but think I was careless (not unlucky) if I step in chewing gum.

So, lacking something monumental (winning the lottery or being hit by a meteor) I'll continue to consider myself lucky overall.

I guess all in all I'm mildly lucky.

I tend to break a little better than even when everything is all said and done.

Most of the time I find myself slowing on the highway only to find a cop right around the same time. I've had many close calls with car accidents but very few actual impacts. A day or two after one of the accidents (actually the most serious, no injuries, just lots of body damage, a friend was actually driving when it happened) I found close to $2000 in a savings account I had completely forgotten about.

My dog was mauled by a couple strays but we were home and broke up the fight and got my dog to the vet. Barring a few scars she seems to be making a full recovery.

Lately the bad luck has seemed to hit technology, but none of the tech I own. In the past 3 days I've hung a self checkout machine at Lowe's and had a self service ticket kiosk at a theatre have printing difficulties. None of my computers are giving me problems but, I probably won't try any pay at the pump gas stations for awhile...:D

I had a girl I was seeing (before I met my wife) dump me for her ex but later that afternoon I got 2 Whatchamacallits from the vending machine at work when I only paid for one (needless to say I wasn't taking the relationship very seriously).

Tends to be the pattern for me, bad stuff happens but when all is said and done I seem to come out slightly ahead when the fit hits the shan.
