I’ll most likely hold onto my 14 PM. Been very happy with it, great camera and battery, screen gets really bright during these hot summer days.

Unless something really blows me away with this 15, I see myself waiting for the 16 instead. Saving my carrier upgrade for Black Friday to get my son a new 14/14 plus for Christmas is the plan

The X was a pretty great iPhone, but the screen was a bit small for me. That’s why I went Max for the 13. I had a 6+ before the X and so the Pro Max seemed like the way to go. After a couple years with this Max-size phone I’ve realized it’s bigger than I really want for a phone. Since the standard Pro models are now 6.1”, it makes sense for me to give that a try.

The question is: will my replacement be the iPhone 15 or 16?

2023 feels like an S year: take the Pro features and start moving down the product stack (eg. dynamic island everywhere) and tighten up the oversights from last year. Plus the obvious performance and efficiency bumps.

So the “risk” for me is that Apple will reinvent something about the iPhone 16 that is significant. Such as a major design change (eg. IPhone X).

I’m not sure I want the brand new thing again. If the 16 was that significant upgrade then the 17 would really be ideal because it would be the improved version of the 16. This means i need to wait to know more about the 16 before I even consider it.

So really the question of if I’m buying a 15 will depend on how I feel about it when it’s announced. The features they are bringing. The updates. And is any of it worth trading to a smaller size phone earlier rather than later?

I always wait for the official announcements before making a decision. Then I wait a bit for the hype to die down so as not to get caught up in it. I expect the 15 announcement in August/September. So we’ll see what’s up soon.

I jumped from the 11 Pro to the 14 Pro. That was a major leap in evolution tech-wise, imp. My first impression was how a total different feel the phone gave me, mostly in user experience terms. Little size adjustments really matter imo. I still enjoy my 14 Pro except for the battery life. Now I’m debating whether I should go for the Max this year. But I’m kinda scared it’s too big for my slim hands. I’m going to visit the Apple Store next month too play around with the Max. Don’t care much about the camera upgrades but a better battery life would be very welcome. Anyway, I think I’m going to upgrade this year. Also from 6GB to 8GB is something that I’m looking forward to. However, there have be something compelling about the 15 Pro in order to convince me to upgrade. I’ll know it when I see it.

Maybe I'm biased, because 6.1" is on the limit for me (maybe even that is too big for me), but considering that this year's iPhone 15 Pro will still have a 6.1" and the bezels will be smaller, the overall size will be slightly smaller than previous years, even if it's just one or two millimetres. That, along with the new design (yes, 2023 is not an S year but rather a redesign year) in titanium, I'm hoping for a lighter and smaller Pro iPhone.

Things will change in 2024 for the iPhone 16 lineup tho. The iPhone 16 devices will probably get bigger, at least for the Pro models. We've already heard about the minimum size increasing to 6,3", because the iPhone 16 Pro will include the periscope lens in both sizes, and they need a bigger size to make room for it on the smaller Pro iPhone.

So, unless Apple releases a smaller 5,6 or 5,8" iPhone 16 Pro along with the 6,3" and 6,9", which is highly unlikely, this years iPhone 15 Pro is the best chance for the people looking for a compact, yet powerful iPhone, because the A17 is expected to be a significant jump in performance/efficiency compared to previous SoCs.

I switched to a Galaxy S22 Ultra last year mainly for side loading. But if the 15 Pro Max has even USB-C and a better camera zoom situation, I think I’m ready to come back to the iPhone. I’ll just deal with not being able to side load better versions of apps.

I disagree about it being an S year. Changing the material used does not signify a drastic change.

Further - you’re basing you’re recommendation on rumors for a device that’s still in very early development. That’s a bad way to make purchasing decisions and is a disservice to those you’re making the recommendation to. I know better because I follow this stuff like you do. Others don’t.

Every tech purchase comes with the “risk” that a new version will pop up that has a significant change that you wish you’d waited for. But people shouldn’t hold off on buying things because of that alone.

In my scenario - if the 16 comes out and is full of all these significant changes, then I can trade in the 15 and upgrade. Not a big deal for me.

In general, maybe we just have different perspectives on what signifies changes that quantify a generational shift for the iPhone.

Yeah, we definitely have different perspectives on what an S cycle is. For me, for instance, the iPhone 13 and 14 are clearly S cycles, because they keep basically the same design and the SoCs A15 and A16 are basically an overclocked version of the previous chip.

The iPhone 15 Pro for me isn’t an S cycle, not only because the material will be different, but the design of the device itself will be different (slightly curved edges), and the A17 will hopefully be much more than an overclocked A15/A16. It will also come with a different charging port, etc.

So, from my point of view, I stand on what I said, but I respect your different opinion and you’re free to purchase what fits best to you. Anyways, in less than two months we’ll see what’s all about with the new 15 lineup.

PS: in any way I think I’m making a disservice, all the contrary, I think I’m sharing a view based on multiple leaks that many people might be missing, and someone like me who is following every piece of news can know better. But if you want, I can bookmark this messages and in 14 months when the 16 iPhones get released we can see who is right and who is wrong.

After all, all that I’m doing is making a service for those who don’t want to bother following each and every leak, and it’s up to them to take them into consideration or not. If they want to take my -in my opinion- founded predictions or not.

iPhone 5 to iPhone 5S went from A6 to A7. The A7 was the first 64bit iPhone SoC. It also came with fairly significant performance boosts. And yet it was on an S-class iPhone.

We also have a different perspective on rumors. While I enjoy them for light reading and gauging what the community is asking for, i don’t find them useful for purchase decisions unless the product is on the cusp of announcement / release.

Yes, the iPhone 5 and the 5S shared exactly the same design, not what is happening with the iPhone 15 pro. But anyways, the line between S-cycles or full redesign is slowly getting blurrier with each generation. So it makes less and less sense, as the years go by, to keep that terminology around. Now the changes to the design are more subtle, and the jumps in SoC performance come more limited.

My iPhone journey was: iPhone 4, 6, 7 and 11. Despite my 11 is perfectly usable, I think that is the time to make the jump for a Max model, probably the 15 or the 14 if I get a super deal.

So the answer is >85% YES :)

Too early to decide. Let’s see what bells and whistles, battery life, camera etc the iPhone 15 pro max has
Have to believe there is a mystery feature not yet leaked ( like the digital island was in the 14)

Who is likely going to keep their current size (Pro or Max) or will you switch it up and why?
I'm going to go up to the Pro Max. I had a Max before and traded down to the Pro with the 13 because I didn't want to wait until the got the 13 Pro Max in, I thought I would be fine but I was wrong. I recently found out I have MD and it is getting harder to see the 13 Pro all the time, so this time I will pre order and get the Max.

Just got my 14 Pro Max back yesterday and it's such a superb phone.

But I'll more than likely upgrade my EE contract with a 15 PRO MAX when released. More so if it's USB C and improved camera capabilites etc...

I'll get a good price for my 14 PM and my early EE upgrade cost will be around £200 so that'll do me well.

They've been brilliant SIM only and made me an offer to upgrade my Samsung A53 5G, so I'll probably take them up on that come the day the 15s are released.

Must admit though that the 14 PM is a bloody good phone!

Nope. The 13 I have is all the phone I’ll need for the next 3-4 years. I won’t be upgrading until I see A LOT of small iterative improvements over a long period of time.

I plan on getting a battery replacement in 2025 and keeping this thing as my daily driver until at least 2027.

I do hope Apple still has a few surprises in store for us.
For better or for worse, the days of big surprises at Apple keynote speeches are likely almost completely in the past. Every single one of Tim's "One more thing" announcements (and pretty much most of the other details of newly released products) has been revealed in whole or in part on various websites prior to Apple's official announcement -- and while MacRumors certainly plays their part, they are by no means the only ones reporting on this phenomenon.

I mean, I'm not saying that it's impossible for Tim to pull a rabbit out of his hat that nobody saw coming... just that it's much, much harder these days.

My iPhone journey has been: iPhone 3GS, 4, 5, 6, 7 Plus, 11 Pro Max, and 14 Pro Max. Very happy with the 14 PM and will only upgrade to the 15 if the Apple store trade-in value is too good to pass up. Also if I get caught in the hype after the press conference there is a chance I wind up ordering LOL.
