In terms of price, performance, and value all in one package?

On Amazon, you can get the 16GB RAM, 256GB storage M4 MacBook Air for $749. This computer will run 99% of use cases effortlessly, and will be good for several more years. A comparable MacBook Air from a few years ago (especially Intel) would cost more and run worse. If you need more storage or RAM, Amazon also has those for $200 less than Apple. While Amazon says the current prices are Black Friday prices, they are basically available all year at those prices.

Similarly, the M5 MacBook Pro, with a larger and much better screen, more ports, more storage, etc is available for $1,349. I think I bought a similar Intel MacBook Pro at a higher price with less RAM and storage a few years ago. The product is vastly improved thanks to Apple Silicon.

I don't think Apple gets enough credit for releasing much better laptops than they did a few years ago at the same or lower nominal prices. The laptops also seem to be significantly better than what the competition are releasing, with a wider gap.

Hell, even the Mac mini is under hyped ($869 for a 24GB, 512GB storage model on Amazon) based on the performance you get.

I get these computers may seem boring, but the Mac line is simply much better than it was a few years ago, and no one seems to be really noticing this.

At they very least they could have upgradable/replaceable storage. Absolutely no reason beyond Apple encouraging e-waste by tying your laptop's lifespan with a wear-component.

I still disagree with the soldered RAM but at least there are some arguments to be made with that. With SSDs Apple could have easily designed a slim connector (they've already done this) and made it easy to replace units without the ridiculous second-mac-apple-configurator nonsense we have going on for the desktops with the proprietary replaceable SSDs.

I found that Apple got significantly more positive coverage from the general Tech-PC world with the M1, and it's still quite positive, compared to everything before.

And maybe boring is what people like. These laptops have great performance and power efficiency and that's really all people want in a laptop really. I still remember getting my M1 MBA in 2020 and was like - "9 hours of zoom on a full charge while still staying cool enough to rest on my naked lap?!?". 😳

Cost of my 13-inch 2020 10th-gen Intel i7 MacBook Pro with 1TB SSD and 32BG RAM: $2,549.97 (sold yesterday for $550).

Cost of my 14-inch 2025 M5 MBP with 1TB SSD and 24GB RAM: $1700.99 (purchased from Best Buy 4 days ago).

The new M5 MBP, with 8GB less RAM, is easily 2x faster than the old Intel MBP.
