That place made me hate all car dealerships.. they wanted to check my credit for a test drive

Proably because you're young(?) and its a fairly quick car and they get alot of young people in there who just want to drive the car and have no interest in actually purchasing one.

. they wanted to check my credit for a test drive

That practice is becoming more common, especially when a performance-oriented car is involved. All dealers in MA now ask anyone who wants to go for a test drive to produce their license. Upon doing so, a photocopy of said license will be made and kept by the dealer. This of course, is to prevent drive-away car thefts.

Fun story about car salesmen: I took my brother-in-law car shopping one day, we were at the Honda dealership looking at a few cars when we were approached by Rick, the high-pressure "what do I have to do to get you in this car TODAY?" kind of guy. Took a couple of test drives, didn't like the guy's attitude or the numbers he was throwing out to us, so as we are leaving (and telling Rick that we're not interested because of his high-pressure tactics) my brother-in-law leaves him his card and says "Call me if you can meet my numbers dick". Salesman says "my name is Rick". Brother-in-law says "I know." :D

Ended up buying something from a really great local used-car dealer. Never had a better experience than at that place.

An update. Some back-and-forths with a couple of these guys. Unfortunately when buying used it's kind of hit-or-miss which dealerships happen to get the car you like from trade-ins or auctions. So I've had to keep tabs on all of them. In the end, I made an offer on a 2005 Matrix.

The good cop/bad cop duo win out, purely on the numbers. If I try to return the car to buy from anywhere else, they hit me with damage charges for the lease. And buying it out and trading it back in again is equally pointless and still involves me paying for tires and admin fees. And the Matrix they had wasn't bad, a fully-equipped XR with 55K (oh, sorry, that's 34K miles).

(Of course, when the "bad cop" turned out to be the F&I guy, he was suddenly much, much nicer as he tried to sell me on the benefits of rustproofing...)

An interesting experience in negotiation, too. I verbally tossed around a number that was $2000 below their asking price, which of course the salesman laughed at. Then I got serious and offered them $1500 less. He took it away, came back and said "My manager says no, but we can offer you $200 off..." That's when I got up and left. Five days later he called me back saying they could offer me $1100 off.

Pick-up is tomorrow. Right now I've got the standard cold feet/jitters. I hope the "new" car is as reliable and trouble-free as the old one has been.

In addition to a $70 lower monthly payment, I'll be saving $30/month on insurance and roughly $50/month on gas.

I hate salesmen. They're either sleazy or annoying and have no idea what they are talking about.

I was at a Jeep Dealer looking at some Grand Cherokees and he asked if I had an old car and I said I did and I told him it was totaled by a deer. He said "Were you drunk?" and I said in the most astonished and condescending tone I could "ummm... No... why would you imply that". He said "Oh well I just had to ask. Just let me know if you need any keys or want to take something for a drive". and I said "No you didn't have to ask...."

I was a bit insulted so I just left. What an arseholl, way to make a good impression on a potential customer.
