getting them out is fun. you go in, they hop you up high as a kite (for someone who's never done any drugs, this is a real once in a lifetime treat! hah), and then you wake up a few hours later. sure, the next few days are rough, and some experiences are worse than others, but don't fear it too much... in the end you'll be much better off

if you're bleeding, i'd think you need to hit the dentist ER now!

flaw of evolution.

what are you talking about, evolution?
the Intelligent Designer in his infinite Wisdom (hence the name), knew that mac_head was going to do something in his teens that needed some punishing, so he directed the teeth to come out sideways and infect themselves.

Not true! As a known Republican, the Intelligent Designer cooked up this wisdom tooth issue to create more jobs in the form of dentists.

Yeah, get to the dentist if you haven't already.

I'm pretty fortunate in that I'll never have to have my wisdom teeth out. I've never had any problems with them and my dentist said as long as I keep brushing them then I'll be fine. :D

I had my four impacted wisdom teeth out when I was 19 (I think). It was definitely a strange sensation to be semi-conscious and feel them crushing my teeth into little bits and pulling the pieces...and it didn't hurt at all. Until later.

Speaking as a fellow who is 32 and still has his wisdom teeth, yet has also experienced similar issues with his jaw I will say this: run, don't walk to the dentist.

It could be an abcess - or one forming. It could also be a tooth dying.

What does the pain feel like? Did it start as if you had chewed gum for too long on one side of your mouth? Had that fatigue feeling, then over the course of a few days that pain began to localize around a tooth and get more intense? (Tooth dying)

Or does it feel like somone is digging into your bone with a dull spoon? (Abcess)

Either way, get thee to a professional.

Perhaps its from excessive use of the word "argh"?

Excessive use of the word argh? I didn't even know I used it.

To patrick- it's a gigantic swollen thing. I can feel the tooth underneath it, so I know it's a wisdom tooth... but it's just swelling.

and why have you not seen the dentist yet, young man? :p

Heh, I'm 30 and no wisdom teeth have come in. The dentist always makes some lame joke about me never getting wise.

Because my mother says, "Give it a few days."

What do I do in the interim?

call the dentist (or an oral surgeon) yourself and get their advice. i am betting they'll want to see you ASAP and perhaps they can convince your mother that this is better treated sooner rather than later.

keep up the listerine (or whatever antiseptic mouthwash you have) and try to keep food out of that area. i hope you're stocked up on that percocet. ouch.

If the pain just started, and there's that degree of swelling, is it wisdom teeth? I would've thought an irritation from an infection. If that's the case, keep rinsing. I had something like this once, and I HATE the dentist, so I just rinsed and rinsed and brushed, and somehow the offending particle worked its way out. That being said, I was probably lucky, and I'd have it looked at ASAP. No kidding. A big old abscess isn't something anyone wants.

Until you see the dentist (ASAP) by the way, you should use an ice pack besides the pain killers to keep the swelling down. Also, CALM DOWN there's only a few hours until morning. Leave a message on your dentist's answering and don't eat anything.

dont worry it probably is your molars, i'm 15 and i have both of my molars growing in. it hurts like a b*tch but it'll go away :)

Man, you people act like I'm flipping out. :p

The pain isn't as severe as it was. I just popped an ibuprofen, and rinsed out my mouth with antiseptic mouthwash. I'll leave it go for a day or so: if the lump persists, i'll be calling the dentist.

This is what is looks like.

Not so much a flaw of evolution as part of evolution. Eventually, nobody will have wisdom teeth, and the dentists will have to sell their Ferraris for poor little BMWs and Mercedes. They might even have to sacrifice their second yacht if not many kids need braces that year!

Definitely sounds like wisdom teeth. If that's what it turns out to be, and you don't have them removed, I'm afraid to tell you that you have a lot more of this in your future.
I don't remember when my wisdom teeth started to come in, but I'm 22 now - getting close to 23 - and they are still working their way out. It seems like they decide to come in a little bit at a time as to not make things so unbearable that you want to die. Funny you should ask about this, though, because in the past few days my bottom left one has been working its way a bit further up, and it has not been a treat.
Like everyone said, though, get it checked out. As long as there's nothing WRONG with them, and you feel like you can deal with this pain off-and-on for a while, just roll with it. You'll find litle tricks that help ease the pain at least for a little while.
Also, if/when you get a little flap of gum and it eventually comes off, it can be gross, but don't be freaked out.

Yea, I am in the same situation. On Monday, I noticed my back left wisdom tooth fully crowned. Well, the tooth didn't tell my gums that it was coming out and I must have chewed the back gums while I was sleeping. Cause now, it's uncomfortable to swallow and open my mouth up for a yawn or eat a spoonful of cereal. Anyway, I have all my wisdom teeth in with room to spare, I just have these tolerate these uncomfy days of waking up with some chewed up gums or cheeks every now and then.

I still debating on wether to get them yanked...
