Apple is completely upfront about this on their Tech Specs page where it clearly lists the USB port as 5Gbps. Google is using the same in their new Chromebook, fwiw.

Interesting from a technical perspective. Hardly newsworthy.

I agree, but I think there's likely to be a good bit of confusion. We'll all survive. 😉
