It's not anything official, but a discussion on a possible flip iPhone based on some new technology. Hopefully there will be a new iPhone coming out, perhaps one a bit smaller.

http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/03/17/photoshop-dreams-of-an-iflipphone/

There have been a bunch of these articles about the technology posted including one on the front page here (last line):

https://www.macrumors.com/2008/03/17/dual-sided-touch-panels-for-iphones-macbooks-tablets/

The front page posting references the article you posted which talks about the patent application and the technology.

Here's the actual patent document:

http://images.appleinsider.com/dual-sided-mt-patent-appleinsider.pdf

The patent application number is: PCT/US2007/019551

Here is a patent application summary: http://www.wipo.int/patentscopedb/e...IA=US2007019551&QUERY=(AN/PCT/US2007/019551)+

which is being referred to as: DUAL-SIDED TRACK PAD

stupid. if they did that, then the iphone would either become enormous, or a lot of screen area would be sacrificed. any moving parts and i'm keeping my 8gb.

wow...thats really all i can say.
It would be a great design for a iPhone, but think of the clear thing in the sun!
I doubt this is going to be the next gen iPhone, but it would be awsome!

One thing to remember is that Apple is constantly applying for patents for all kinds of things, some of which may be years away from market or may never, ever come to market.

That being said, I do think someone will try a flip phone that's all screen at some time soon (if there isn't one already)? Either two capacitive (iPhone-like) screens or one touchscreen and one hard screen like a DS....

I hope Apple doesn't exclusively do something like the DS. While the DS is a better portable than the others out there, I EXTREMELY hate that touch screen at times because you are supposed to use a stylus. If I had 3 hands, that would be awesome. Alas, I'm stuck with 2.

As far as the iPhone, I can't see much wrong with the current design. Maybe eventually it could be slightly bigger, but that would be a huge venture because of all the 3rd party docking accesories.

Anywho, for a 2nd generation product just a year after the first generation, I doubt there will be any major physical changes.
