I thought FM was on the rumored list of new functionality as well...

Personally, I feel that FM radio if added, would put the iPhone onto the list with all the other cheesy MP3 players that have that option...Just use Pandora!:)

Good for you. Some of us would actually like that FM tuner for things that Pandora cannot do. Like tuning in the TV audio at the gym, for example, so I can watch & listen to the news while I'm on the elliptical without having to rely on the closed captioning.

I'd be perfectly satisfied if Apple would just fix it so the iPhone can use the FM tuner they already make for iPods.

They have been around for awhile, so it is inevitable that it would have made it's way to iPhone.

Good to see Japanese maker, should be done right.

I see your point, I actually do. If Apple had done it first, some would be saying "there goes generic MP3 player knockoffs copying Apple again."

Just like if others had put a Magnetometer in it first, some would be saying " there goes generic MP3 player knockoffs again putting gimmicky toys into their offerings."

So I guess it comes down to your ingrained Apple fanboy loyalty level. HEY! Maybe that's what they can put in the next iPhone-- fanboy loyalty level! ;):p

If you're not a loyal enough fanboy, your Apple device bricks up. lol Carried it one too far with that.

There's no way in hell it's going to be that accurate. Get real.

Would probably be less a problem of accuracy than getting an image in low light conditions. Knowing where a user was located, the rough direction they were pointed, the date etc, you could create a star map, and then use pattern recognition to warp it to fit the on screen picture presumably. Maye not instantly!

We'll see!

If you're talking about the tv audio frequencies like 87.7... Those will not work in about a month due to the digital switchover

Why are we just hearing about this now?

IF there is a next gen iphone to be announced in June...then the unibodied aluminum is already being laser cut, the dual processors are being fitted to the logic boards next to the 2 gigs of ram, the 3.0 operating system is already being uploaded to the 32GB solid state drives as the high capacity removable batteries are being slipped into place, and the eco-friendly boxes are already being loaded onto pallets.

It's a done deal!

Well all that (roughly speaking) probably has happened/is happening already, it's just that it's taken until now for someone to "dig up" the header files thus discovering the supplier.

Sorry to squelch your cynicism, but it is that accurate. Check out the SkyMap app by Google for Android.

The universe in your pocket

With Google Sky Map for your Android phone you can discover and browse the night sky just by pointing your phone to space.

By using your Android phone's orientation sensors, we can show you a star map for your location. Explore planets, stars, constellations, and more! Learn the name and location of space objects and impress your friends.

Features

Search: Find planets, stars, and constellations guided by your phone.

Motion detection: Sky Map uses your phone's GPS, accelerometer, and compass to create a window in the sky that moves with your hand.

Celestial objects: Browse a map showing the brightest naked-eye stars, planets, sun and moon, constellation lines, horizon, cardinal points, and Messier Objects.

Navigation: Use automatic mode to let Sky Map adjust the map for you or switch to a manual mode that allows the map to be dragged with a finger.

I see no reason that Google won't release this for the iPhone.

Would this open the door for Nike+ on the iPhone or am I way off base?

No, the Nike+ device is a small accelerometer that you put in your shoe which communicates with an iPod with an attached or built-in receiver.

A magnetometer, or digital compass, wouldn't open any doors for this device to work with the new iPhone. You'd still need the receiver.

No, I am in fact referring to the low power FM broadcast the gym uses so customers can listen to the audio from the television screens mounted above the cardio equipment. This has nothing to do with analog vs digital television.

Temperature sensor

Did anyone notice there is a temperature sensor built into the chip? Check page 18 and 20: datasheet

The value of the temperature can be read through the same serial interface the x, y, z-values can be read. So this means that the new iphone will theoretically be able to measure temperature? But I'm not sure this can be done without hardware modification...

I did some calculation: the chip can measure temperature from -30 °C to 85 °C with a precision of 0.625°C. (-22 to 185 °F with 1.125 precision)

No hardware modification is necessary to get the temperature information from the chip. Like you said, the temperature can be read throught SAME serial interface (I2C) as x, y, z, and Temp value. It really is a matter of rather if Apple provided that information in the SDK or did they simply ignored and discarded the temperature information so that the developers might not be able to easily access it. If not, it is a SOFTWARE modification and not HARDWARE modication that is required.
