If you play any MMO these days you'll see Asian and Western leet and emoticons come together and reference each other. I even see some young guys using kekekeke and knowing why they use it, which is kinda cool.
88888 55555 are maybe the most common Asian ones. 8's are ba's, that's pinyin for the Chinese character for 8. Ba sounds like bye.. baba = bye bye, so you'll see them spam 8888888 when they want to finish a convo. That's cool for us, because that's Asians referencing and using English sounds alongside their own language.
5's are wo's which sound like our wahh's (but for them more like wuhh), like crying as a baby does, so they'll use 5555's to denote sadness or crying.
I bet most people who use chat like MSN or in game on an MMO will have used or have seen Asian style emoticons but just didn't know it.
