    Your Apple ID. :)

This would be the email address and password you entered when setting your phone up through iTunes or previously.

Were you logged into your itunes account when you synced the iPhone? Perhaps that could be a problem?

That'll do it... Even if you are only trying to get free apps, they still send you itemized receipts and everything.

If you're getting the ID and Password prompt on your iPhone, then I was going to tell you you have to plug it into iTunes (and you have to log into your iTunes Store account on iTunes while the iPhone is plugged in), but I guess you resolved your issue - hopefully this thread will help the next guy out!
