Great to see more quality games on Mac. I’ve not yet played this, I have hopes but, I am skeptical. Ubisoft has such depth of skill in visual design and general story, but generally they could use work in making the world feel ‘lived in’ and game mechanics.

Already big controversy in Japan, even from PM

Yes, there will always be some who take offense, like in the US, to any given “idea” but not all.

Ubisoft have issued a Day 1 patch to placate the Japanese politicians. Big tech sucking up to politicians - who'd have seen that coming ?

Might be helpful to understand the controversy that many are annoyed by…

Some people just want to be offended.

Did they? What’s the patch doing? Anyway the controversy is well deserved. If they made a story set a few centuries ago in some south saharian country with one of the lead characters being white there would have been outrage. It’s unclear why it would be any different with Japan.

It might be that there is less controversy in Japan about the main character, and the real worry might be the disrespecting of an important shrine. Some perhaps see it a bit like disrespecting a Christian symbol. It won’t offend every Christian, but it will offend many.

Controversy, no matter the size, is also the intoxicating to the media gods.

I think understand the controversy. Shrines can be destroyed by players. It’s not part of the story, but if you choose to mess **** up you choose to mess **** up. This was the same in previous games.

Am I wrong?

It seems the same as the romance options. Person who chooses all gay sex related romance options offended that romance leads to gay sex.

People in MacRumors, like Apple, know what gaming really is. When Assassin's Creed Shadows is widely criticised, they are the only group I have seen that do enjoy that game.

You know, performance issues aside, the reception from people who have actually played the game, particularly on consoles, is quite positive (even on Reddit of all places).

I bought this today and played for an hour or so. My M4 Pro Mac mini at 1440p was getting just under 30 FPS average and at 1080p just under 40 FPS average.

I'm not much of a game player these days so my opinion might not carry much weight, but I found it to be fine to play.

The day 1 patch witch removes the destruction of shrines is mandatory to run the game so effectively this issue did not exist in the game at all for any customer.

They've worked with Apple and used the latest technology on Mac like Raytracing Illumination, Virtualized Geometry, SSLR and Strands-based Rendering for hair and it's not a port.

If it's not better than a PS 5 Pro or Series X console version, it is a tough sell. I have an M3 Pro and an M2 Max Studio, and if there is no AT LEAST 40 fps with ray tracing on the M3 machine, it is a no go. And I wonder if AS games on M Series Pro chips support 120 fps. Kinda think we'd have heard that.

Hmm
"Gaming on the Mac" continues on I see..

What's surprising about that? I assume it's MBA M4 8c GPU without active cooling that throttles after a while. That GPU does about 3.7 TFLOPS. Here is ARC A380 which does about 4.2 TFLOPS with the same low settings and XeSS upscaling on Performance in the game doing 30 fps. The benchmark is also far more demanding than walking around like in the image.

Resident Evil 3 is free with in app purchases. I won't even bother checking if it's just one IAP to get the full game or they also sell smurf berries in there.

And look at this brilliant display of technical prowess:

"This application is approximately 31 Gb. Important note: the installation process requires that you have at least twice the size in free storage space available."

Seriously?

You pay $10 and get the full game, that's it and the requirement about twice the size is wrong if you have Sequoia. You can even install it on external storage.

I've got a load of Ubisoft games I don't play.

Bought Fate/Samurai Remnant and Like a Dragon Ishin! and they both occur around the time of Musashi, so I'm set. Neither works on a Mac, unfortunately.

I think they are missing a decent opportunity here. The price of the game, in Australia at least, is more expensive on Mac than it is on my PS5 by over $20. Make less of a margin in the early stages, but people to buy the game and start using Macs for AAA games.

As much as I appreciate a developer porting to Mac, I just can’t support Ubisoft any further.

I do hope it runs well for all those interested.

Good to see more games launching on the Mac and happy to see Apple silicon is capable to support these games. I would prefer to play this title on Xbox though.

I bought the game to play on my M4 iMac. At 1600x900, it's playable, though both performance and quality are mediocre. Performance at 720p is better, but it's pixelated from the upscaling. A had assumed that, since this is in the middle of the system requirements chart for the game, performance would be adequate.

Looking on the Mac App Store from my M2 MacBook Air, it says "Works on this MacBook Air." I know this is below spec according to Ubisoft's system requirements, and the MAS shouldn't lie like that. FWIW, I downloaded and launched the game, and it gave me a warning:

"We have detected that your device does not meet one or more of the minimum hardware requirements, which may result in unexpected issues with visual quality, framerate and stability."

I gave up, asked for a refund, and bought it on Xbox. While it looks cartoonish compared to the better images on my iMac, it plays smoothly, and you don't have an options menu with a dozen choices for levels of video effects. I'd rather play the game on the Xbox than worry about all the settings on the Mac. I spent about two hours trying to find settings to make it play smoothly, to no avail.

Fail on the part of Ubisoft, but even more so for Apple, who touted this as taking advantage of hardware-accelerated ray tracing in M3 and M4 chips. They should have pointed out that you need Pro or Ultra chips, and, even then, from what I'm seeing on Reddit, performance isn't great. This said, apparently it's not great on PC either.

So Apple kind of blew this launch, highlighting the game with a story in the carrousel at the top of the Play stage. Worth noting that they've removed that story, and even when you go to the game page, it's not linked at the bottom of the page.
