    Sophos was uninstalled soon after the kernel panic occurred, but since then the machine has failed twice more.

    if this report after removing sophos you may have to remove the remaining files manually. most kernel panics are ram related so could be worthwhile checking ram not iffy

    What are you doing when it fails? Any file transfers or unplugging of devices?

    The user says he is usually browsing the Internet and working in Microsoft Word when it fails. No peripheral devices are connected other than an Apple wireless keyboard and mouse.
