ASUS Strix GeForce GTX 970 4gb factory OC

I totally understand this has been beat to death so if this offends anyone please look or run the other way. I have searched & read everywhere on the internet (& here) about the the TDP of this card ( from 170-ish to 225 & Up ) which doesn't say much because most tests have been on Windows, which doesn't mean a hill of beans to me. This card has One (1) 8 pin slot. I do have a 6pin to 8 pin adapter but have on order the dual mini 6 pin to 8 pin, if it ever gets here on the slow boat from China. Does anyone know for sure if it is "safe" to run in the 5,1. I would love to ask MVD but on their "contact us" is only if you want to buy or flash a card, so didn't bother. If I can't get a definitive answer, I'll just sell it & stick to the old 120. Got this as a present by the way & would like to use it, .....

To be 100% safe, I'd run it with a dual 6pin to 8pin adapter.
While I don't think that the GPU will consume much more than 150W in total, it may easily exceed 75W on the PCIe booster cable(s) since it's an 8pin connector (and consequently consuming less from the PCIe slot).

That said, the GPU won't go anywhere near its rated TDP as long as you don't throw any heavy computing applications / games at it. So you could also install it with just a single 6pin cable and observe the power draw (e.g. iStat, HWMonitor) under light/medium load.

Well, that's what I thought also. I have a cable ordered so hopefully I'll be able to use it. As I said, I've looked all over on this card & others but most of the write ups have been a year or so. Wasn't sure if anything had changed since then. Would like to do the mod straight off the psu as it has been shown on here but don't know if I would screw anything up. I read also the card doesn't run its full potential because of the 2.0 slot, but that wouldn't change the wattage, I guess. I did put the card in for roughly an hour with the 6 - 8 cable & it ran perfect, fans don't even come on & no rev in the case fans but didn't do any applications either. Really quiet. Don't have HW or iStat so don't know what it ran.

Hi! im in the same boat. I have the same card with the single 8pin slot. What type of cables did you use to make it work? And from where in the Mac Pro 5.1 did you take the power? I have search every where but no one seem to have the proper solution. Thanks in advance . / Markus

I ordered the y-cable from the slow boat from china, but have to say, works fine. There are 2 mini 6 pins at the Y connections & 1 single 8pin to the card. Some pics that may help. Card has worked perfectly. IMG_8235.jpg

Hi
You can use this cable and the link has been provided below. I am using that cable with my GTX 970 in my mac pro and so far it works like a champ. Never had issues so far with the video card. Was able to play games an use Adobe Premiere without any issues, also Davinci Resolve. Just info the cable was going to be used in a HP Z620 but i sold the Z and i end up using the cable with my MacPro

dtechlogic, does your card have two 6 pins or one 6 & one 8 pin connectors. Couldn't tell in the pic. My card as yours runs anything you throw at it, however, occasionally it won't wake up after a long period of sleep. Haven't thought about it but I have that trouble too, lol. Anyway, have any of you guys had/have that problem. It only does it for long periods of sleep, maybe couple of hours or so.
[doublepost=1489936381][/doublepost]Markus, did the pics help on the hookup. I can take a pic of the cable itself, if that would help.

Mine has the 6 and 8 pin. So far I have not had any problem with the wake up so far. It wakes up and I get the login screen.

OK thanks...I don't have mine set to the login screen when it wakes, just goes to the apple screen. I read a lot of posts that some have it, some don't. Maybe characteristic of the card or preferences set. I'm running my Asus 7970 right now to see if it does it. It has the 6 & 8 pin connector also.
Thanks for the reply
