Hi All,

I'm trying to see if my Asus Strix GTX 970 card will work in my Mac Pro 3,1. I know the GPU has an eight pin connect but the mac only has two 6 pin connectors, will an adaptor work to combine the two? Or will there be too little/too much power?
Thank you,

Kro97

On reference cards with stock clock a single 6pin should be easily sufficient, even under full load.

On OC'ed cards I'd use a 2x6->1x8 adapter though. Those cards can consume >200W, which is way more than a single 6pin can/should provide.

I am using that card in my 5,1 with one 6-pin to 8-pin adapter without problems.
Thank you!

Hi guys - I'm kind of clueless here. I picked up an ASUS STRIX GTX960, 4GB for my MAC PRO 3,1. The card has 1x6 pin PCI-e connector. The motherboard I see has 2 available PCI-e power connectors (male). If the power available for each connector is 75w and the card can draw about 200, do I bridge these connections by a y-cable to give me 2x6 > 1x6? I am trying to understand what is protocol here. Getting this info is hard to find.

Asus says 150 watts, which is why it only has one 6-pin connector.

The card will draw 75w from the PCIe slot and the rest (+ ~75 watts) from the single 6-pin connector, so there's no need for extra connections.
