Asus Ultrathin Laptop - Good Competition?

There's no denying the benefit of competition.

The fact this Asus looks like my new MBA is a compliment to Apple.

The fact that Windows 7 is a very good OS, makes for a great experience for those who prefer Windows.

Everyone wins, I really like that.
 
My guess (I'd have to have more details to be sure):

1. Trackpad and scrolling won't be as good as the MBA.

2. Monitor won't be as nice (bright, high res) as the MBA.

3. Sound won't be as good as the MBA.

4. It will cost the same as the MBA, or maybe more.

It has an i7, which is nice. The next MBA 11" will be fast enough.

People aren't realizing that the ASUS Laptop is 8 months older than the current-gen MacBook Air's. The MacBook Air's have had this super-thin design since October 2010 and ASUS is just beginning to incorporate it into it's laptops and it's almost June 2011. Pathetic if you ask me.
 
First thing if hackintoshers got success in running may be Lion on this successfully then i would too consider this if it is priced below the MBA but you cant copy the complete appealing and sexier design totally 😱😛
 
I want a mac, but if this is priced as they say it is, this thing will banquet on the MBA's flesh. ASU!S may be on the track of something big.

If you read the article, Asus reps mention it is going to be priced below the MBA. How much, we don't know.

What's pathetic is that MBA is still running C2D. Asus redesigned what already existed and from the looks of it, made it better. A lot like what Apple has been doing for decades.😛

Why the hell could Sony produce the VPCZ 13" 3 lb laptop 2years ago that still, IMO slaughter the current 13" MBP?

Apple is greedy and lazy. iOS has set OSX and the Mac Line back several years.

Funny that Steves favorite story is about being the outcast division at apple with only a few of them working on a dead product. I bet on campus now, the Mac/OSX developers have to eat lunch last, keep their mouths shut and clean the restrooms.

They are not revolutionary anymore with their Macs. It painfully obvious and as a long time Mac user, I can bitterly admit this.

You've obviously never used Mac OS. How is the trolling going on a Mac-dominated forum? How exactly does a Sony Vaio "slaughter" any current generation Mac laptop? Please tell us.

I'm frankly quite ignorant of Linux alternatives. I think a lot of other people are too. The dress and form of early Linux distributions may have been the culprit, but I still have the (perhaps outdated) view that Linux is not as user-friendly as its two alternatives, and it is lacking device & software support equivalent to Windows/Mac. I'm sure it's inaccurate, I'm just telling you what I'm thinking..

Sad that those competitors just need to copy the design Apple put first out.
And even then don't have the same level of comfort: somehow in the video the guy had trouble to open the lid with one finger. He had to quite use his fingernail to open. MBA is better here. And those are the little detail Uncle Steve makes the difference.
But on the other side: still looks nice ...

Correction.
It's up to i7 and up to 7 hours battery. You can bet your bottom dollar that those two statements are mutually exclusive. Especially with W7 in the mix.

That doesn't mean Windows is the only option. And I don't know from when you formed that opinion, but Linux has made great strides since I've started using it as my desktop OS in the 90s (back when KDE 1.0 wasn't even released and Gnome was in beta... oh the days of Enlightenment at its peak).

It's even come to the point where I find using Linux boring.

And for most people that OS is Windows, considering that it has roughly 90% market share. KnightWRX is 100% right, most people don't need a specific OS for their workflow.

If you need a certain OS for your workflow, then I would say you are in serious trouble, especially if that OS happens to be OS X. Apple has a monopoly, no-one else is allowed to sell computers with OS X. We have already seen Xserve being discontinued and I would say Mac Pro is next on the list. Even if it doesn't get discontinued, it won't get much love from Apple, meaning that it will use outdated hardware and cost a hefty premium over other systems. It's quite obvious that Apple doesn't care much about the pro market.

Usually, pros are the ones who have a workflow that may require a certain OS. That is the only reason why Mac Pro is still alive. What happens if/when Apple doesn't offer a computer that suits your needs?

Like KnightWRX said, web browsing, email and IM can all be done with in any OS. If someone chooses one OS over another in that case, he is simply doing it because of preference, not because he needs that specific OS to accomplish his tasks.

Windows was running X86 many years before APPLE even dreamed of Intel CPU's

Apple jumped over to intel just like windows. So who copies who?

So dont come here claiming apple invented the frickin wheel because they didnt.

Just remember that the MBA was CRAP originally.

Only today are there SSD's and low power CPU/GPU which can make these notebooks run well.

The Sony TZ was also WAY before apple.

That is true in this case, but don't forget, who actually came out with the first computer and then the information was stolen from Steve Jobs.

Apple did then IBM/Microsoft joined forces. Have you ever watched Silicon Valley? Might want too. 🙂

This is about as off topic as this can get. In other news Apple released a PR statement about WWDC and does not include anything about the air refresh. Is the supposed rumor still true?

Apple never says anything about Mac updates beforehand. It's possible that MBA is a "one more thing". Moreover, it could be updated after WWDC in late June for instance
