I just called to see about getting my tele# changed to my "new" area code. AT&T told me it was going to cost $36 to make the change to a new number.

I use Google Voice, so my cell# is only relevant when I forget to dial through the GV app, making it a bit hard to justify spending $36. I just re-upped my contract with AT&T and bought an iP4, but I probably wouldn't have canceled and re-initiated service just to get a new number since I'm grandfathered into unlimited data.

I doubt this is unique to AT&T, so who can blame them for sucking as much money out of my wallet as they can without going to jail, but are there any viable tactics to get AT&T to wave this fee?

I went through this about a year ago when I moved across state. What I was told is that it's free to change to a NEW area code. The $36 is if you change WITHIN an area code.

I would go into an AT&T store. I got a different answer each time I called, but got what I wanted when I met with someone in person.

Ah super, that actually makes sense.

Sometimes they will waive the charge, I know I spoke to one cool CS person and they noted the change without charge because I was getting calls from an unknown number and I was not able to trace it, so they changed the number and I was never charged.

The flip side to # change is I got a number that was previously used before so now 1-2 times a month I get a call for that person, also some carriers have my number listed with his name, so when I call someone with Comcast Triple play my number comes up with his name and not mine.

Still working on changing this around, or maybe requires another number change, however I really like my new number and do not want to keep doing this.

I went to the AT&T store and they took care of it quickly. They also said that if I need to change it in the future (with no move justification), just be sure to mention that you're getting some sort of harassing or annoying phone calls and they'll waive the charge.

Thanks!
