I have a 11 Pro Max with AT&T but I am waiting for the SIM Free version, unfortunately not available in the store. Been checking every day... So if I buy a 12 Pro max with ATT from Apple Store and pay in full, does ATT charge me the activation fee?

Also, I know it's unlocked phone - but still want to confirm if the ATT iPhone 12 Pro max model is the same as SIM-Free version?

I see people were discussing about the new SIM that comes with the new iPhone 12, saying that to better support 5G, might just buy one with the new SIM. Is that true? If that's the case, I don't mind paying the activation fee.

I usually buy SIM Free version every year and just put in my old SIM... I wonder if I should just go ahead and buy an AT&T one this year because of the new 5G support...

Thank you all!

Just put in your old SIM. Does not matter if you get the SIM free unlocked one or the ATT one. With the ATT one you are locked to ATT network until you get it unlocked. Your current SIM probably won't work with 5g and you might not even have a plan that is 5g compatible but will work fine with 4g/LTE. There would be no activation fee using your existing SIM.

If you really want 5g then you will have to get new SIM and possibly change plans then they will charge you activation fee but just protest it and they should reverse it.

I had a dispute fee on my bill I simply clicked it and the fee was credited. No argument whatsoever didn’t even have to explain why I felt it should be removed. Did this for my wife’s iPhone 12 Pro and plan to do it for my 12 pro max as well.

Thank you for all the replies above... I still haven’t bought 12 pro max yet. Sigh...

The plan is to buy a SIM-FREE and use my old SIM first. My AT&T plan is the one with 5G support. So I am going to the AT&T store to request an e-sim: free I think. Then when I travel overseas (who knows when that would happen though), I can buy sim locally and use the dual-sim capability.
