Whew. Took me 5 hours of attempting in all manners, finally got it to work through itunes. Good luck guys.

Cloud computing could fix this

Is it too much to ask that iPhone owners just wait a few hours?

Apparently. We live in the 'right now' culture, I guess.

Me? I'd rather wait a little while rather than pay AT&T even more money so they can build up a system for activating a million iPhones at once that will only get used once a year. What a waste of money.

Likewise, it didn't bother me that it took awhile for me to download iOS 5. When everyone's trying to do the same thing it's gonna slow you down. Ever been to a concert or sporting event? Sometimes you've just gotta wait.

They don't need to spend millions to build the system. They just need to leverage the cloud capability they already have. Scale the system up on days they know it will be used and back down when not needed. If FTD florists can do it to handle increased demand on Mother's Day, it seems a little ridiculous that a massive telecommunications company like AT&T can't get it right. It wasn't like they didn't know this was coming.

Hours

If there is a queue, we can probably figure it mathematically.

Looks like the people getting activated now first tried to activate five hours ago.

I first tried to activate four hours ago, so (figuring in additional load) maybe I have another 60-90 minutes to wait.

Maybe people can mention when they first started trying to activate, and when it finally activated.

3.5 hours in trying to activate

was just told it will take another 2 hours after a 45 minute wait on hold.

AT&T stinks. What was I thinking????

Complain loud enough though and they'll toss you a $25 bill credit.

Finally activated one phone, the other one went fine--but no service. I checked settings and it said sim not provisioned. I am now trying to restore via iTunes. Other new phone is totally up and running--this is via AT&T using the website posted earlier. SIM not Provisioned--what does this mean?

Well. Mine just activated, and I started at 10:30 AM PST (it's 2:45 PST now), in Seattle.

A buddy of mine in Portland started at 8:45 AM and his still isn't activating.

So maybe that blows my queue theory out of the water, unless there are different queues for different regions or something.

I guess people should just keep trying.

Should say it may take up to 300 minutes to activate your iPhone.

I got mine from Apple.com for ATT and started trying (and failing) to activate at about 330pm. I tried both from the phone and via itunes. It just worked, finally, on my 4th attempt on itunes. Just keep trying.

Did they email you or did you just keep retrying the activation?

Now I'm getting:

We’re sorry. There was a problem completing your activation.

You can restart the activation process by turning your iPhone off and on. If activating via iTunes, please disconnect and reconnect your iPhone.

Anyone else?

Same. I doubt those emails were ever going to come, so they edited the message.

I don't understand why this isn't working. I've been doing this for hours now and it doesn't work.

No email notification or anything. Luckily my old phone still works, but this is seriously insane.

I've tried on the phone on 3G, on Wifi, I've tried on iTunes. All of them countless times. My friend was able to activate super fast since he's like a business customer but I have to keep waiting. WTF?

Getting the same here after trying to activate twice every hour.

Yeah, I just started getting that too. Connected to my iMac / iTunes. I'm turning off the phone, closing iTunes, powering back on and launching iTunes but that doesn't seem to be helping. I've been trying different ways for 5 hours.

To confirm, the message everyone is getting is:

"We're sorry. There was a problem completing your activation.

Anyone have an answer for this? Just picked mine up from my UPS Store box and wanted to try to activate but need to have phone service today (getting married tomorrow and need a phone that works today.)

Would love to have the 4S ready for the rehearsal tonight so I can try out the camera and show off Siri to my Android-loving nephew :D

Congratulations on your marriage. :)

Don't accidentally say "Siri" when exchanging vows, though.

I got the same. I started getting this message about 20 minutes ago instead of the other one.

To the people complaining, I have a statement and a question for you:

• I fully agree with your complaints and criticisms of AT&T.
Why did you choose AT&T, especially since the 4S is available on two different carriers with much better reputations for reliability?
