I currently am living in Alaska, which is a part of the United States (some people still don't know this), and AT&T does not support service here; however, I've seen a number of individuals using there service up in this icey tundra.

Does anyone know how I would go about signing up with AT&T when I live in an state that they do not support? Should I just lie and say I live in Seattle?

you have to have an address in their home area to get the plan initially. While AT&T works up in Alaska, they are using contract towers and have the right to cancel your contract if you start using too many minutes on the non AT&T owned towers.

If I were to catch a flight down to Seattle and fake my residence, I would be able to sign up for their service and use the iphone as a phone; however, I just learned that if AT&T finds out that you've been using the phone in an unsupported area like Alaska for over 4 months, they will terminate your services.

I'm going to cry now. I hate AT&T.

Thanks for the info. I guess the only way I'll get to use an iphone is if someone successfully unlocks the thing; I don't need visual voice mail anyway; no one ever calls me.

I've been using cingular in Alaska since August. I have not been caught yet. Two of my friends though did and had to get a different carrier. I heard that they will only care if your line of service starts costing them more money than you are paying for it. I only use 1/4-1/2 of my plan minutes a month so that could be why they haven't cancelled me yet. I also used the phone in oregon and california in parts of december and january

Do you use a lot of your free nights and weekend minutes? I'm really considering on taking a chance with the iphone. My sister lives in Colorado, so I can use her address.

i use more night and weekend minutes than my plan like 300 of the 5,000 i get. Anyways I wouldn't be worried about this anymore since AT&T announced they are buying Dobson which are the towers they contract with in Alaska. Soon you will be able to buy a new line of service with Alaska as your home network. Don't know how long it will be though

    (got my iPhone today)

Well, you're about to be in luck. AT&T is about to gobble up Dobson/Cellular One. So soon Alaska will be a supported area under AT&T.

That's wondrous news. I wonder how long I'll have to wait...Are there any links showing information on this soon-to-be purchase?

I may buy an iPhone soon, too; especially since you can instant message on them now. I was planning on getting a macbook for internet and chatting at school, but the iphone should do nicely.
