I would like a no mandatory data plan.
Someone like my wife that would eventually use it only on wi-fi spots.
That's a shame they are not planning to offer that. I would buy one for my wife if that was a possibility. I just think some people rather not have the extra $20 to $30 p/month data plan but would like an iPhone.

At T-Mobile, you see those new Samsung Touchscreen phones for $99, but then you read the fine print and that's WITH a data plan. The phone is $149 without a data plan.

I could imagine AT&T letting people get the iPhone without data, but charge $299/$399 instead - unlikely though. They make a lot of money with iPhones on data plans...

Sarcastic moral of the story: How DARE a company actually charge money for services they provide. :D

If their were another alternative to ANY wireless carrier and their pure profit texting, for one example. You might not hear such complaints.

I myself would have gotten an Iphone if I could have just used wi-fi for my primary data, and pay per use when on the road. Or if the plans would drop on voice, If you recall voice plans have been increasing over the years, especially considering how you are required to get them or have no service at all. Many people enjoy much fairer grandfathered plans. I myself almost got sprints reasonable (then) cero plan, on a palm centro, but I heard about it too late and was unsure about it, not having studied the frankly ridiculous, data plans of everyone else including them.

I realize these over handed tactics are an attempt by the phone companies to compel all users into mobile plans over landlines, but I personally feel that in this economy , all of them had better change their business models, because ,frankly not everyone can, and will afford them. I am a long time PDA user who has and still resist the converged device, notion out of the profit margin, aspect. I don't need texting enough to pay $20 a month of pure profit to Any provider, now I am more inclined to pay $5 a month which I feel is at least reasonable, for say 5-7000 text a month like my nephew clocks in.

As for data If I need to google something out of range of an open wifi signal, I am all for say a $30-40 MAX phone/data plan. Not the $100 bucks My sister in law waste on my 13 yo nephew. If you run your entire business from your device that might be more reasonable, but for the entertainment of a child it is irresponsible spending, but sooner or later the piper will get paid, and companies like the airlines, auto, and housing industries will not longer be the only ones to hit the proverbial bread lines begging for an undeserved hand out. I am seriously thinking about going back to tracphone myself once my current contract runs out, because much like the cable companies who charge $50 bucks for 70 channels that only have 5 I ever watch. The value of what any phone company provides me is sorely lacking.

It is much like the argument that the current "I'm a PC" ads try to propagandize about pc's being cheaper than macs. Sure they are if you dont consider all the total crapware that stinks to china loaded on them.
And FYI my centro had 32 , yes 32 crapware aps loaded to rom.
So yes I, and I hope soon to be many others begin to really rethink whether or not the services being so "generously" provided is really worth the wage being paid for them, because in my opinion the answer is no.
But hey If money is no object I have several schemes I would love to get off of the ground to those who would care to throw a little bit of change my way.

Here in Alaska we get 5kbps on EDGE, tops. I don't think I could go over 250MB if I tried. I'm all for a cheaper plan.

We get 33.6kbps tops in my town.

I didn't upgrade to the iPhone 3G simply because I wasn't pay $15 more per month considering I can't even use 3G.

Free unlimited texts would make me happy.

Amen to that, I'd be happy with the current unlimited rate plan if it included text.

I'd much rather have a $20 unlimited (truly unlimited, not this <5GB a month limited "unlimited") data plan with tethering, and a 30 minute a month phone plan. I don't even use the phone anymore.

Fat chance you find a rate that low with tethering.

I would be slightly more inclined to pay $70/month if included unlimited everything (i.e., text messaging).

I'll take it.

AT&T would be taking a big chance if they offered tiered data plans. I have to believe the majority of iPhone users use less than 500MB of data per month...

Possibly, but Apple would certainly sell more units. And that is what's most important to Apple and its shareholders. AT&T's pricing plans for the iPhone are ridiculous and are most definitely affecting iPhone sales, bottom line. And let's not forget that one will only buy apps, peripherals, etc, after they've purchased an iPhone. There's more to it than just units sold. ...it's a lifestyle. ;)

I agree that new customers would likely be enough to compensate, for AT&T.

I could imagine AT&T letting people get the iPhone without data, but charge $299/$399 instead - unlikely though. They make a lot of money with iPhones on data plans...

It's 249$/349$ CAD without a data plan here (Canada)...

"De la Vega dismissed the possibility of an iPhone with no data plan as AT&T makes the bulk of its income from selling these add-on services."

I'll have to check whether an iPhone I buy elsewhere can be activated without a data plan (as I have need for such a plan but do need to sync my contacts and calendar).

If I can't, then it looks like Alltel keeps my business for now.

haha, maybe they'll come to SF when they're done out here. They've been putting up 2-3 new towers a month for awhile out here.

...and where in the hell is "out here" at?

I've read enough different posts over the last month to tell me that one carrier or the other is not the best one nationally. They are all good or bad somewhere and bad or good somewhere else.

I think once Verizon gets their system up so they can handle 3G service, a combination of AT&T and Verizon will give the best aggregate national coverage. Until then we're going to see these continual snipings about one being better than the other.

I'm so god damn tired of the outright lies from AT&T and Apple.

The cheaper rates, however, would come with limits on the amount of data that can be transfered.

Half-truth. The more expensive rates also come with limits on the amount of data that can be transferred.

The current iPhone plans provide unlimited bandwidth.

Wrong. Their 3G networks is currently limited to ~3.6 Mbps (and hot damn if you can get that). They are rolling out support for 3G at ~7.2 Mbps speeds. That is not unlimited bandwidth. Their fallback EDGE network supports ~384 kbps.

AT&T is the direct cause of why high-bandwidth apps in the app store are limited to WiFi only. Not only can they not provide their advertised bandwidth, but they block the apps (within their power) that are likely to use that bandwidth.

The bottom line is that AT&T knows they will not sell significantly fewer iPhones by keeping the current data rates. They have no incentive to change the rates because they know the iPhone will sell anyways due to the hype. Just look at all the people around here that have practically sent Apple their money already.

Alternatively, they may introduce a lower tier just to look good. They have data about the average monthly data use for all their iPhone subscribers. It's probably quite low and their limited plan will be capped at some amount of data below the mean so the majority of users will pay for the unlimited plan anyways.

I am tired of this BS from providers. I pay the cable company every month for a set bandwidth (and a lofty data limit I've almost reached once). I pay; I get the advertised speed 24/7 for anything I want. The wireless carriers need to get with the program.

If AT&T sells you 5 GB/month with their unlimited plan, that's fine. You should be able to use that 5 GB for anytime for anything. It's reasonable to expect slower rates at peak usages during the day. When you reach 5 GB, disable data access for the rest of the billing cycle- simple as that.

what i don't get is why the iphone is so damn expensive in the US. 70 dolllar a month!!! and you have to pay for the phone too!

in the netherlands you pay 20 euro/month, you get a 16 gb 3G for free, unlimited bandwith and i guess 300 texts are included

to bad i live in belgium :)

I suggest they do the same thing that Sprint is doing with the Pre offering unlimited texts with unlimited data plans. I would gladly pay 20 dollars for unlimited both, text doesn't cost them any bandwidth.

What AT&T should consider is multiple plan with mutiple iPhone price.

Anyone choose current $30 data plan then keep $199 & $299 price.
(In this case $5 texting plan can be select)

Anyone does not select $30 data plan but select texting plan
(In this plan texting price only available $15 & $20 plan) then $250 $350.

Anyone select nothing(only phone call) then price should be $499 $599 as before.

So any plan above AT&T does not losing money..Neither Apple.

is that 40.3MB & 537MB for just one month or for the seven months you'vd had your phone?

I'm a day late, but this is the usage my phone has clocked for the seven months I've had the phone. I've never reset the stats. If I check my actual AT&T phone bill for the last month (and this is for 2 iPhones and a non-"smart"phone) it's 144 MB, TOTAL! And I'm paying AT&T $70/month for that data access. I knew the rate when I signed up for it, so I'm not complaining about that necessarily. It is what it is, however, I won't complain if they come up with lower data cap plans.

I would love a plan of something like 250MB a month, for say $15 a line or a "Family Data Plan" cap of like 1 GB a month total for $40. All just a dream I'm sure....

The bottom line is that AT&T knows they will not sell significantly fewer iPhones by keeping the current data rates. They have no incentive to change the rates because they know the iPhone will sell anyways due to the hype. Just look at all the people around here that have practically sent Apple their money already.

This site, and other Mac related sites, represents a tiny sliver of iPhone buyers. If it was just us the iPhone would have similar market share as the Mac.

Hype drove the original iPhone. The prospect (only partially delivered) of 3G, along with a hefty price drop, and the international launch, drove iPhone 3G sales. Hype has left the building. The iPhone and ATT service has to sell on it's merits at this point. Personally I don't consider the iPhone hype because it delivers as advertised. The upcoming additions in iPhone 3.0 plus whatever hardware improvements are made in the next iPhone version will only make it a stronger product.

Oh joy... a well you went over and now your savings means JACK with your 400 dollar data usage fees.

Since we already have a cap on our great unlimited plan then they should offer us smaller caps at lower rates
