"Tone"??? It's written text.... there is no "tone".
Here's a great example that illustrates my point exactly:

I agree. I had nothing bad to say about Apple or AT&T.

This just sounds bad! I would consider leaving them.

Written text has inherent tone whether it's intended or not. Good writing conveys the tone you wish it to have (sarcasm, anger, levity, etc.) as efficiently as possible.

Apple.

If Apple released an iOS update that enabled FaceTime over a cellular network, what do you think AT&T (or any other carrier) could do to stop them?

There's no law that requires AT&T to approve Apple's software.

Apple does have some pretty cosy relationships with the carriers though, so this means that the restrictions in iOS are influenced by the demands of the industry as a whole.

yes and no. its more so the carriers than apple. they whined (all of them), that their networks couldnt support the data and apple caved. same for the last tethering app. it passed apple fair and square, which they admitted, but carriers bitched and apple caved.

***edit*** misread that. we said the same thing...duh.

I can't imagine that many people lowered their texting plan because they have iMessage. Why?

1) If you're on a family plan, texting is so cheap as a whole. (If you're not on a family plan, get together with some friends and get on one!)
2) You can't dump texting for all the people who don't have iPhones.
3) iMessage is taking the texting load off of AT&T, so it's a benefit to AT&T. Sort of kidding on this one, since I'd assume the texting load is kind of low. But if I've got unlimited texting, now I'm using AT&T texting less when I text to my iPhone friends (especially when on WiFi).
4) Most customers probably don't even realize iMessage now uses less texts from your texting plan.

My 2 cents...

Gary

The only reason I still have my texting plan is that the unlimited is the only option. I'd downgrade to 200 if it were still available. My texting usage dropped from a couple thousand to about 150/month thanks to imessage

With the way things are going, this whole industry is getting turned on it's head.

The majority of people I know that have iPhones use them with iMessage and email and their voice usage is down a lot.

Messaging and chat definitely have become a norm for most over talking since the communication can go back and forth at the convenience of the two individuals vs having to be on the line.

The whole mobile industry is a scam. The price they charge for texting is criminal. I wish Apple would buy a carrier/stream and just basically take over the industry.

If you think a better model exists, why don't you buy some spectrum, cell towers and other equipment, start a competing company, and give everybody (including me) better service for a lower rate?

while thats a great idea, youre not accounting for the fact that the average small business couldnt afford to break into the mobile business because of the high cost of startup. kind of a moot point because of that.

All I have to say is that I'm glad gas companies don't operate like ATT.

Can you imagine your first 10 gallons being 30 bucks then every gallon after that is 10 bucks, and if you don't use up all your gas in a month it vaporizes.

"In the last quarter, AT&T made $3.58 billion in profit on $29 billion in sales. "

Awwwwww....poor ATT. How much more do you need in PROFITS EACH QUARTER?!!?...YEARS after you introduced the product?!

Total greed. Even if 15% of ATT's iPhone base is still unlimited (anyone know what % of ATT iPhoners are unlimited still?), they'd only be making more revenue (and how much more?) by converting these 15% to non-unlimited?

I'm unlimited and have NEVER gone over 500MB/month. So even if ATT switched me to one of their tiers (for the same price let's say...even though THERE ARE CHEAPER TIERS), ATT doesn't make a penny more off me. Ever. Granted not all unlimited folks uses as little as I do...but when you do the math of 15% being unlimited, then X percent of them not earning ATT a penny more, the numbers add up to little overall percentage gain in revenue/profit for ATT.

ATT just needs to suck it up. You can't win them all. Here's 1 win for the customers out of decades of losses.

People here are so brainwashed it's amazing.

Apple forced AT&T to offer unlimited as part of being an exclusive carrier. It was back at a time when data was 2G and a heavy user used 20MB a month. People who signed up felt they were entitled to lifetime unlimited data at fast speeds for that date...even though the speed/use of data has grown exponentially. And how dare AT&T not build infrastructure off that same $30 to pay for ever increasing data needs.

Every rational person who owned a business would think the exact same way. The 'all you can eat' model for data consumption doesn't work in the cellular world which has a much more restricted 'pipeline' that other internet service options.

Of course a lot of the vitriol is because it's AT&T. If Apple ran a cellular service and Steve Jobs said this last year, people would be fawning over how profound it was.
Eh, you're stretching things. First of all, Apple didn't force AT&T to do anything. AT&T bought into the phone when it was still an unproven device. At the time, zero percent of their business was the iPhone. They took a calculated risk, knowing full well what Apple's terms were.

You're right about the all you can eat model, though their restrictions are still too strict. Perhaps there just isn't enough capacity period for their entire network of users to run their devices how they want to all the time. If that's the case, they need to look into other solutions for the service they claim to provide.

I think most of the vitriol comes from the fact that they're making billions of profit and keeping it for themselves as opposed to making their service better. Yes, I'm sure that they spend a lot to improve their network each year but the fact is it's not enough. That they have so much surplus profit shows that they have room to budge.

"Good business" to some means making as much money as you can regardless of anything else. For others, it means making a solid profit while making your company the best it can be. There are differing opinions on the matter just as there are differing political views in the country and there isn't an easy "right" answer. But from all accounts, yes, this guy's statement was a douchey one to make. :)

I guess that makes you a troll then. I suppose you think 20 cents a text (the equivalent of $1,310 per megabyte) is perfectly reasonable? Didn't think so. Cry me a river.

If you actually pay 20 cents a text then YOU are an idiot. You can't blame AT&T, then have reasonable text plans.

I was going to say drop the texting plan, but if you do average 150/month the cost of the texts would average $30/month.

Text is data. If you're already paying for a data plan, there's no such thing as a "reasonable text plan."

I didn't see them complaining when they were taking everybody's money for the "unlimited" plan over the past 5 years. Most people will rarely hit 2 to 3 GB (myself included) so I don't understand the complaints about network strain. The Tmobile merger was a fiasco and he should have been fired for that. Oh well, let's see what happens with the next iphone.

And here is an interesting article in the LA times a few weeks back talking about AT&T's power in Sacramento. Wish they would spend the money on improving the network instead.

I can't believe he was upset about iMessage moving in on SMS. iMessage is faster, cheaper, doesn't have the annoying 160 character limit, and supports delivery receipts.

How have cellular companies been improving SMS over the years? Have their been any industry-wide attempts to add new features or reduce prices for the consumer? Nope, they've been perfectly content selling the exact same service at the exact same price year after year. How can they be surprised that SMS is losing popularity?

This is a great example how outdated they are. We're talking about tech-industry. If you don't eat your lunch, someone else will eat it for you. The last they should be doing is to sit there and simply count money. AOL says hello.

I have ATT's unlimited plan, and i hate this guy who runs ATT.

Personally, first time ever got a warning i went over last month and this month i need to watch it.

Frak them. Why should i get limited on my plan at 3GB of data when someone can buy a larger 5bg plan and not get limited at 3gb?

I have a fraking unlimited plan, unlimited ought to BEAT 5gb. instead this loser in charge of ATT is screwing us over.

BS part of it is i have been an ATT customer since ATT earlier, then cingular, then ATT again. so i have spent thousands with them.

Any appreciation from ATT?? none

We don't run out of it, it's just at capacity. Even when the towers are maxed, someone is enjoying bandwidth.

There's a difference between depleting something so that it no longer exists (a resource which is finite) and having restricted access to it.
Oh god... forget it. Keep your head in the sand.

Dear Mr. Randal:
Some day the only regret you'll have is the day when you removed unlimited data and gave us all a reason to look elsewhere.

In a day where WiFi is ubiquitous ( it's coming), we will all go buy ipod touches and a VOIP app and kick your sorry ass to the curb. Kiss your Company goodbye.

Take a look at Republic Wireless to see the future. There's no ATT there.

P.S. I already kicked your ass to the curb and have grandfathered unlimited on Verizon, funny my calls don't drop anymore.

Dear, AT&T employee/troll...

Your idiotic commentary is void of any logic. AT&T's abusive pricing model pushed literally millions of their customers to both Verizon and Sprint. The only thing Mr. Stephenson understands is how to continue with a monopoly approach to the market after they no longer held a monopoly!

You must be one of those "Occupy Wall Street" idiots. Void of knowledge and full of other peoples opinions.

Look up the facts and you will find that the AT&T haters and blowhards like yourself typically did NOT move to Verizon when it became available. There have been many articles on this site specifically that show AT&T did not lose customers. The articles were written out of shock.

Mr Stephenson being the CEO of a AT&T, is required by his board to profit make every effort to profit for his company. AT&T gained exclusivity to the iPhone, not a monopoly (look up the difference). AT&T took what other network providers turned down (and then tried for years to reverse that mistake). AT&T paid Apple for the exclusivity and they were rewarded for the success. They built one heck of a network to keep up with the iPhone. Those are the facts. If your pea brain doesn't want to research them, thats fine. Quit making a fool of yourself by posting ignorant rants of misinformation.

Do a little research before you embarrass yourself any further....

Greed & stupidity

If you are not happy, let all us iphone users off the contract so we can go elsewhere and save you some capital. Isn't it enough we get so many dropped calls and the internet so called 4g is damn slow? Greed plus arrogance = AT&T

Did AT&T halt your service at 3GB when you have unlimited? I didn't think so... When you bought your unlimited plan, you were getting 1-2mb connections, not 10-15mb connection. When they throttle you, do you still get the 1-2mb connections? I thought so.

What happens when the speeds are 100MB? Should you be downloading 30-50GB a month for one fee while everyone else pays per plan.

Go on over to Sprint and get 1-2mb all the time (if your lucky and if you can find a tower).

Good Luck!

EVERY test shows AT&T 4G is the fastest. Do your research!

Only 3.5 billion dollars profit this quarter!
... how will they ever manage to get by?

Greedy! Greedy! Greedy!

Why not take say a billion or two of that and invest it in improving their lousy system instead. Who knows, maybe they'd get more customers out of it. This guy has his head straight up where the sun don't shine. Yet another "business leader" leading us out of the first world.

You saying anything about Apple Profits while they totally rape their customers. Personally, I have no problem with either, but just making sure you understand business.

and.... the iPhone rode the AT&T network to success. AT&T investing tens of billions growing a network that kept up with the iPhone explosion. It is truly incredible how many people post complete nonsense.

OR, are you like most of the other folks who have posted and are just looking for AT&T to give it all away for free.

I can get the unlimited data bit. The reasoning behind that is pretty solid.

But cry me a frackin' river over messaging plans. They probably make phone companies more money than McDonald's makes off drinks. If companies would just include a few texts with each voice or data plan or not charge you for incoming texts that you don't want, then maybe it would be a sane thing. But that's not the case. Someone gets your cellphone number, you get hit for a text charge. That's bullpuckey.

Two words:

Royal Douchbag. Any tech business as big as ATT is going to invest heavily in infrastructure as a matter of course. Its how the business works and aways has been since Edison. The fact that he underestimated Apple and the success of iOS devices just shows his own lack of business acumen. Stupid jerk ought be fired is what the shareholders should be screaming.
