I submitted an unlock request through the AT&T website for my 5s just for the heck of it. To my surprise, the unlock request was approved. I restored my phone on iTunes and was greeted with the 'Congratulations your phone is unlocked message.'

The only thing I can think of is that when I switched my family over to the new family share plan, it caused the computer to think the contract had been completed. That's the only explanation I have.

I always had issues doing this. I send in a request, it get denied, the do a on-line chat, and then it gets unlocked.

My problem is that I am a pre-paid customer for a MVNO and not a real AT&T customer, therefore I cannot create an account on the AT&T website to chat with a representative.

Anyone willing to try my IMEI on PM for me?

I filled out the online request and my 5s (which was bought on contract) was unlocked the next day. At the time of the request I had a G3 on my line not the 5s. Move another phone to your line and they'll probably unlock the 5.

I on the other hand am not so greedy. PM me. :)

Please report back and let me know if this worked or not.

If it works, I'd be willing to PayPal someone $5 or so - if they are an AT&T customer and would submit an unlock request using the IMEI number for my iPhone 5c.

I purchased my AT&T iPhone 5c (factory sealed, never previously activated) on Cragislist and have always used H2O as the MVNO wireless provider. I'd like to unlock this thing without having to sign up for AT&T service.

On your AT&T phone, dial *639# (for "NEW") and hit Call to see when you can upgrade to a new phone. It will tell you your contract expiration date.

I guess I figure it out how to make it work

After a long call with the representative she told me that the used iphone 5 locked to AT&T request was denied since the info placed on the online form did not match the account holder.

So I restored the iPhone 5 with an AT&T chip inside from a friend so the device will be activated under my friends account and phone number.

After that we submitted an unlock request using my friends account information online with the used iPhone 5 IMEI

Device is unlocked. :D

How long did it take to receive the unlock code after you had submitted the unlock request online?

So, you put in friend's SIM card into your iphone, restore it set it up as new and then submitted unlock request from friend's account. Did you keep friend's SIM in your iphone for 3 days or put back in yours after the restore-request was submitted? And was this iphone under 2 year contract?

After restoring the locked iphone 5 with my friends SIM inside and ACTIVATING the AT&T phone with an AT&T SIM from my friends account, he submitted an unlock request on the website.

I put my H2O SIM card back and continue with my life.

My friend forward me the unlock email request that was granted.

Points to consider:
He has that old Unlimited data plan that is not available anymore (Probably not in contract)

He also submitted request for his Gold 5s and it was granted before the 2 year "contract" since he acquired the 5s a few months after it went out to the market.

I think that results may vary but, it worked for me to make the device appear on the servers from an account that has fulfilled the requirements.

I just did that and the message I received did not include a contract expiration but instead notified me of their NEXT plan. I purchased the phone at a subsidized price and earlier this year moved from my unlimited data plan to a cheaper capped 10GB plan, but AT&T will still not unlock my phone until that original 2 year agreement is fulfilled.

I paid off my NEXT balance this morning and i went to the website to request an unlock. it was denied cause the system was still showing my Next plan as active. I then chatted with a ATT rep. they created a case and a few hours later my request was denied again. this time they say i'm in contract which isn't true (a next plan isn't consider contract i think...) and that i also needed to have my ATT account open for 60 days (its been almost 2 years -_- ). I had another rep create a new case and escalate it to the unlock team as i should be eligible. They doublechecked everything and said yes i was eligible. Awaiting the results but they are really making me feel less guilty with my plans to switch to T-Mobile after i get it unlocked.

AT&T has persistently denied (actually, refused to do anything) to unlock by iPhone 4 from 2010. I have sent them multiple requests through the online form & over the phone - I only get a canned response back and nothing happens. The phone has stayed locked.
