I just got an email thanking me for my 3G purchase, not even 3GS and I got the 32gig 4 from the apple store. I had a 2g and never anything else. What's the deal?

Same thing. I freaked for a second and went back to review my order on Apple's site, but it looks like (another) stupid mistake by AT&T.

Got the same thing around the time I finally had a tracking number up. Much later ATT sent more emails, and those say iphone 4.

Just AT&T being AT&T.

AT&T's mainframes have been irretrievably overloaded and are puking out old emails in a form of regression to infancy ...

... very similar to when the HAL 9000 started singing Daisy, Daisy

That just gave me a hilarious visual. It so sad and probably maddening to Steve that he has to work with the ineptitude of cell phone companies.

Two years from now AT&T will send you an email thanking you for your iPhone 4 purchase. They're just a little behind their game.

My guess: AT&T has a service that messages new users / users that recently changed phones. They probably also contain a database of the current phone each user is using; this information is there because every time you log in to myWireless you can see your phone.

What they do when they send the e-mail is probably check what your current phone is, and then send an e-mail saying "Welcome to your new" + phone.

The reason why this works is because pre-ordering is uncommon. Therefore, when this message gets sent, the current phone is usually the phone that you just bought. This isn't the case now.

I guess testing BEFORE doing it "live" wasn't a thought for AT&D.

Perhaps they simply mean thanks for purchasing a new 3G device, because the iPhone 4 still runs on a 3G network.

Just a thought? I'm not sure, I haven't gotten that e-mail yet.

I got the same email and was like "um, excuse me?!?" Thank you AT&T for confusing me and making me concerned.

This must be AT&T's formula:

Apple customers buy everything apple so when they upgrade take the current phone +1 generation and thank them very much for their loyalty.

No, because I got the same email thanking me for buying a 3GS. They're just sending out an email to iPhone 4 buyers with a bug that's stating the customer's current phone rather than their new phone.

Um, the iPhone 4 --IS-- a 3G phone. The letter from AT&T is correct. It's a 3G phone running on AT&T's 3G network.

Congratulations on your 3G phone purchase.
