AT&T -> "Fan"?

I'm thinking of switching over from Verizon over to AT&T for the iPhone, of course.

I see a lot of people posting here saying they've got "fan" accounts and "fan" discounts.

What is this mythical "fan" term?

Is it some sort of special discounts? Do I qualify, as a student?

This is the site i went to entered my school email address as the one my school gave me, and got an email back stating I was eligible for a discount.
