XLTE is just Verizon marketing for places they can throw out LTE over AWS 20x20. Phones that can support this band are named XLTE equip. Really nothing special.

LTE-A if i'm correct is just software, however its still an adjustment that has to be made.

LTE-Advanced requires Release 10 equipment on the towers and a software upgrade, something of which only T-Mobile has fully implemented. :D

All 4 carriers are using identical Rel. 10 compatible equipment. Only T-Mobile makes a big deal about it.

And not to mention, AT&T LTE-A (more specifically, carrier aggregation) is already live in Chicago. Earlier than anyone else in the industry.
