I have one on my account at 1:51 am that used 186,735KB. Am I converting this right?? Is that 182MB??? I was asleep at that time, so what could my phone have possibly been doing that used that much data????????????

That data usage didn't happen AT 1:51am - it happened BETWEEN 1:51am whenever the next entry in your report is.

Did you keep your unlimited data plan? If so, I don't see why it'd be a problem. But if you didn't, I have no other advice other than bitch out AT&T. That's a pretty ridiculous amount.

So it would be between 1:51am on July 2 and the last previous posted data usage, right? The last one before that was July 1 at 8:05pm. So is AT&T saying that in a little under 6 hours I used 182MB? And looking at the one before that which goes from 7:57pm-8:05pm that was 14MB I'm ever more suspicious because I know exactly what I was doing at that time and I definitely wasn't using data on my phone.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A293 Safari/6531.22.7)

Sounds like a deliberate attempt to generate overage charges. Oh my!

I'm thinking more like a mistake on the part of AT&T. Would you be ok if you had a certain amount of data you could use and you noticed that some of it was happening when you weren't even using your phone?

Sorry, I meant "after" in terms of chronological order, not the listing on the report. So if your data usage is reported at July 2 1:51am, and the next entry in time, or previous entry on the report, is July 2 7:57pm, that's the time frame the data was used during.

The reported data usage is show at the START of the time period.

(I've tested this empirically, by rebooting my phone, updating a 1MB app, rebooting, updating a 5MB, rebooting, and updating a 20MB app, and finally rebooting. Then when I checked my AT&T report the next day, the data usage corresponded exactly with the time the phone came back up before that data usage.

Thats good to know. I still have no idea how I could have possibly used 180MB in one day, but this is good info. Thanks

This has been going on for quite some time.

Lots of luck getting the issue resolved.

You'll hear 100's of reasons why this is occuring.

Check your bill when it arrives. You may be surprised to learn that you are not actually charged for these phantom data transfers.

However, someone mentioned that he had to update his plan because he was just about to exceed his 200mb limit and he wasn't the one using up all the data transfer.

If we are paying for these phantom transfers that occur mostly while we sleep, then Apple and AT&T need to positively explain what is occurring and what we need to do to stop it.

Wait.. I'm confused about something... Some people are saying they are on wifi and and getting outragous data charges blah blah...

When I'm at home my iPhone automaticlly connects to my homes wireless Internet so am I being charged the data usage for being on my home wifi?

data usage is reported from the GGSN for billing purposes, so its only going to be reporting data sent over the network. Something is getting mixed up...almost like something is assuming bytes are kilobytes (some of these would make a lot more sense if that was the case).

The game changer is that they are starting to make hard charges for data (none of this soft 5GB unlimited cap non-sense), and when you bill people for incorrect overages, some federal agencies will notice....and thats never a good thing for the carrier.

Some people are seeing data usage on their AT&T report for 2:00am, which is when their phone is at home connected to wifi.

What's really happening is that the data usage happens over a period of time, starting at 2:00am and ending whenever the chronologically next entry is. Which is when the phone is in a car, at a restaurant, at a doctor's office, at work, etc.

You can download a terabyte at home over your wifi and not a bit of that will show up on your AT&T statement.

Whatever the problem was, it has seem to gone away. I am seeing much more normal data usage charges. It seems that there was about a week and a half period in late June where these charges appear to be inaccurate. If anyone went over their 2GB plan, I would seriously take any overages with a grain of salt. My data is pretty much going to be normal for my July billing cycle. I am not buying into this "4.7GB" transferred in late June.
