Looks like AT&T has upped its International Passport Plan to 1GB for $60.00 and 3GB for $120 for a 30 day period.

Wait, aren't they doing the day pass now? Last time I was abroad it was $10/day to just use my plan from home, which is currently unlimited. That was awesome for me for a week and a half of travel to not worry at all about data, but I could see these being useful for longer term stay if you don't have an unlocked phone to just swap a local sim in.

This is in addition to Day Pass. This is just revamped Passport plans.

When you get a sim.... how do you know which is the best sim for where you will be? For example, we have unlocked phones but how do I know which carrier to pick? Also, when we were to mexico right before the carriers improved the options with our US based Carriers there... there were like 23098604 hoops we had to jump through to get a darn sim. In the end it did not work for us. We are likely traveling to German in the next few months and maybe Italy. Would love to be able to use my unlocked phones there:).

In Europe it’s not difficult to get a local sim at all. Ask at the hotel.

I use both local sims and passport at times. It depends on where you going, i.e. one country or multiple and for how long. Best time to use att passport is multiple countries (besides Europe) in a short time. If going to just one country or Europe, a local sim is best.

Your best option may be to purchase a SIM card at the airport in Germany when you arrive. There are usually several phone kiosks at the airport and they would make sure it is working for you and is going to have the best coverage for the places you are traveling. Also there is now free roaming to other European Union countries so you wouldn't need to purchase multiple SIM cards for each EU country you visit. Last fall I had a Spanish SIM card (Orange) and purchased 5GB of data for $20.00 and it worked throughout several EU countries. Most of the time they need to take a photo of your Passport when you purchase one of the SIM cards.

Get a Three SIM “all you can eat”. We use it when we go to France.
