Enough with the overages

This is just another step in the wrong direction. I am happy to see that they are now actually giving people extra data when paying for tethering, but $45 for 4GB works out to almost exactly $0.01 / MB. Why not just charge $0.01 / MB then and be done with the freaking overages? Oh yeah, because you can get away with stealing money from people by charging them for data they don't actually use. At least add rollover to data then if you are going to add a subscription model. Otherwise, why would anyone do this?

Help Me Understand

Hi guys...I'm a little confused....I have a IPhone4 with unlimited data....so...if I want to tether my IPad to my phone I will have to pay an additional $25.00 for 2G or $45.00 for 4G...is this correct?...

...or I'll keep my unlimited plan and MyWi on my iP4 and tether for free, limitlessly. The greed of these carriers over data is seriously ridiculous!

Americans should complain!

$45 for 4GB combined? I pay £5.5 aproximately (less than $9 USD) for unlimited internet on my iPhone including 1GB of tethering and if I want an iPad data plan only, for £15 ($24 USD) I get 15 GB of internet!!! American mobile companies are ripping of you guys! You should protest or something!

I don't think they are greedy. I think people just seem to want something for nothing. Last time i checked AT&T is a for profit company. It's this simple sense of entitlement that everything should be free or cheap that has ruined america.

You would need to downgrade your plan from unlimited to the set data plans of 2GB. Not worth it in my opinion. Just use MyWi to use your unlimited data plan on your iPad since it will broadcast the signal.

When they allow me to share the same plan between devices for 5$ a month then call me. But a free month is good

As an AT&T unlimited data subscriber this type of policy is so frusterating. Why can't I use the data I pay for in the way I want to? It's really making me consider Clear. Problem is... if I get Clear it will replace my home internet connection (Verizon FIOS currently) but not my AT&T wireless.

It's amazing, you watch the keynote and see all the beautiful ways Apple products can change the world: Teaching kids, helping doctors. Allowing us to communicate with our freinds and families in ways previously only dreamable. Making movies, music, art, etc. And yet telecommunications companies keep adding layers of fees and exceptions that serve to stifle these kinds of progress.

Holy crackers. Put the Ayn Rand down and step away.

Last I checked, if I pay for an "unlimited" product then I'm not getting something for free. I'm getting unlimited for a price. Unless of course, that for-profit company decided to offer something that it couldn't provide in order to hoodwink customers. You know, deceptive marketing practices.

These whack-job econ theories that people are constantly using to justify price gouging, market manipulation, accumulation of wealth ... in short, greed, is what's ruining America.

Suck on that. #winning #tigerblood.

So, AT&T announces that you can now have your iPad data billed with your regular AT&T cell phone bill and all the babies on MacRumors come out crying.

If one has an iPhone 4, it seems it makes more sense to simply add tethering for $20 and broadcast wifi to the iPad, rather than add 3G cost to the machine and $25 for 2 gb of data. Assuming one always is in possession of the iPhone, that is.

No?

Except I'm on the unlimited data plan and I assume I'd need to "downgrade" to the 2gb ($25) iPhone plan.

This is exactly my plan too, to save $129. I'll use the 3G connection a couple of times per year, but not worth it if I can Hotspot instead. I'm still confused though - can one sign up for one month at a time with no contract/penalties? Say, I'm going on vacation in August so I set up my Hotspotting for August, no more no less?

The autism video made you tear up, didn't it

So pretty much AT&T should just give unlimited data away and become a Not for profit company? You know what i don't think the issue is the DATA i think its AT&T. Not one person on this board has bitched or moaned about Verizon's plans which are Worse.

It really is beautiful. Apple makes these amazing products and gives them away to make the world a better place.

What AT&T is doing is like Apple charging $499 for an iPad!

You need to suck on the fact that you pay for unlimited data on your PHONE, not your phone, iPad, and laptop.

So I pay Charter for my internet service... That means I pay for internet on my MODEM and not on my computer, PS2, 360, Blu-Ray, TV etx. etx. etx.

Your statment does not make sense. in this scenerio the PHONE is more like a MODEM. It has a chipset that acts like a modem, your phone acts like a computer ans Safari or any other app is the software.

Verizon is pretty new, so the userbase is limited compared to AT&T. Having simultaneous voice and data is why I'm staying with AT&T presently...that and my unlimited plan.

The point is, looking at a corporation for a reflection of balanced economics is like handing out chainsaws at an insane asylum in winter and expecting ice sculptures of immense beauty. Large businesses will justify their greed with every possible manipulation of language, in any format that will make their words appear as honeydew dripping from the flower of telecom on a sunny spring day. They would be slipping their advertisements to customers subliminally if it wasn't outlawed.

One more point...even IF I were to use MyWi on my iphone to broadcast data to my ipad, it's still receiving data on my iphone. I just happen to be transferring it via a NON-TELECOM Wifi signal to my iPad. AT&T would only be pissed cause they can't make a buck off of thin air. I still do all the same stuff on my iphone that I do on my iPad. No difference. I stream music, cruise the web, watch some youtube, etc. The only change is the screen size.

Live long and suck it AT&T.

Your statement does not make sense. Technically what you say is true, but that's not how businesses price the services they sell to you.

Have you ever noticed that broadband Internet providers charge more to hook up to that same MODEM depending on whether it's used in a home or a business location? Do you understand why? I'm guessing you don't.

Seriously? You've posted on threads that are about how Verizon's plans suck.

I find it funny that in an closed industry with huge hurdles to entrance, exclusive product contracts, and government protection rackets, how consumer pricing is pretty much the same no matter which company you go with. That includes any telecommunications (e.g., cable, satellite, wireless, etc.). Must be some strange coincidence. And it's all set at rates that few people exceed. If water in the west was priced like bandwidth, the southwest would have set a nuke off in DC already.

Yeah but there seems to be a deep rooted hate for AT&T where people have blinders on and lose logic when it comes to discussions. Granted i know in todays social-eco climate that most americans view big companies or even people that have money as evil.

Nope.

I've been using my iPad as a WiFi only device and it rarely is a problem. I got the 3G capable version, but haven't felt the need to activate it once. Living in Los Angeles, it's kind of easy.
