Comparison to toll-free means...

It's a little-known fact that when you call an toll-free number, the company that is paying for that number gets your callerID - whether or not you are hiding it. The argument is that they are "paying for your call, so they should know who is calling them."

This would seem to be the same thing - they are paying for your connection, so they should get data about that connection... What data, though, is a question I cannot answer...
 
Lol any carrier would've been more than happy to take the iPhone. AT&T had to pay Apple for the exclusivity deal.

The iPhone was an unknown. Verizon rejected Steve Jobs, AT&T has deep pockets and could easily take in Apples new phone. By agreeing to an exclusive deal, it helped AT&T and hurt Apple. Oh sure Apple made a big profit, but if they'd kept the exclusive to just one year they could have offered it to other carriers sooner.
