That's because they use two chips, which uses a ton of battery power. The iPhone 5 uses 1 chip, and a lot of effort went into making it this way. Just wait until Voice over LTE is turned on.

Interesting, I read on a blog otherwise, but I guess they were definetly missinformed after reading some more. well regardless the iPhone 5 supports VoLTE, which is where the voice information is sent as a data packet through the LTE data connection.

the iphone 5 does not support VoLTE. This is specifically spelled out in their FCC filings.

Actually, the OP might as well read the anandtech article which goes into great detail about the technical challenges surrounding voice+data: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6295/...ous-voice-and-lte-or-evdo-svlte-svdo-support-

iPhone 5 cannot hold LTE signal

I am having the same problem with my iphone 5--it cannot hold the LTE signal

But seems like a hardware problem, not a network problem My wife's 32gb iPhone 5 (on AT&T) holds the LTE signal all the time. My 64gb iPhone 5 (also on AT&T) constantly switches from LTE to 4G. In fact it always drops to 4G when I use the Maps app. Same iPhone 5s, and on the same network. But only one has a stable LTE connection. Tried all the suggested fixes-none work.

That has to be an iPhone hardware problem. No reason that one iPhone holds the LTE signal all the time, and the other iPhone does not.

Is there really any advantage to a phone having VoLTE other than the obvious? The only two advantages I can see is
1) Faster data access while on a call
2) Is able to use a signal network

Don't get me wrong, I'd rather it use LTE for everything, but at the end of the day, does it make a difference as far as my phone call goes?

On a side note, I wonder why the S3 is supposed to support VoLTE, while the iP5 doesn't. I guess maybe in the 5s or 6.
