Ah, I see. Up until now, I believed esn and imei were essentially the same. This makes a lot more sense now. Thanks.

ESN/MEID = CDMA devices
IMEI = GSM phones

they are both unique serial numbers used to identify and authenticate wireless phones on the networks.

hybrid devices like the iphone 5, have both an MEID for use on CDMA networks in addition to an IMEI for use on GSM.

For anyone that is wondering, there is a one digit difference when comparing a MEID and a IMEI.
