or if you are lucky, in some cases, they will unlock it for you before the 2 years is up. there doesn't appear to be a rhyme or reason to this, but give it a shot: there is an online form that takes 1 minute or less to find and fill out. if it works, great. if not, just a minute lost...

Sometimes they let u slide.

Great thanks. now I have to explain this to my 65 year old neighbor who is going to israel and wants her iPhone. Fun stuff.

ha good luck: maybe be just faster saying: i have something that might work and then doing it for her...

i'm guessing if accepts the submission, it will finish through in 2-3 days as they promise. at least that is what my friends and i (who were successful) have experienced.

but then, even after that, once she gets the confirmation email from AT&T, she would need to do a full restore using iTunes to unlock it.

interesting. i guess maybe it just works? how else would one confirm that the phone is unlocked? i didn't get the "congratulations, your iPhone is unlocked" until i did the full restore.

I got my 5S unlocked through AT&T and immediately put a TMO sim in it and it acquired a signal for TMO and all the carrier configuration settings changed. I didn't get a confirmation it was unlocked through iTunes because I didn't do the restore, but using a TMO sim will confirm that it is actually unlocked.

cool. i guess i liked the warm and fuzzy feeling even if i had known it was possible to do it without that. i took my phone traveling to Italy, so i wouldn't have had the luxury to try it and "hope it works."
