My point is that nowhere does AT&T say that they are getting rid of offering the unlimited plan for the iPhone.

Yes, it does. Because the iPhone plan was no different from the other unlimited data plans. They didn't explicitly state it but it's going away. Existing iPhone users are grandfathered in, the "unlimited" iPhone plans are gone for new customers.

AT&T is to data, as Israel is to Gaza.

Excellent point. AT&T is trying to contain a problem that has already gone too far. If AT&T doesn't introduce tiered pricing and caps and encourage people to use less, we will all lose.

Hopefully other carriers will follow in kind so we can use our phones without fear of them dying on the road. I'm really tired of a few selfish whiners messing up common services for the rest of us.

Not according to the AT&T rep I spoke with. She said the unlimited plan will still be offered for new iPhone customers after June 7th.

Hold on - now another rep is saying that it IS going away... Got some more calls to make.

I don't trust reps. They were just told of these plans today as well so they may be working on assumptions. I bet it doesn't exist when the next one comes out.

How deep in the Apple/AT&T cult can you be? They offered UNLIMITED service - if they couldn't provide it due to technical limitations, it was a LIE to offer it especially since they've now capped at 2GB knowing that the iPhone OS 4 will consume more data based on multitasking capability. The only reason they're grandfathering is to avoid lawsuits and FTC investigations.

Tough choice for me. I've never really gone over 500mb/month, averaging about 300mb/month this year, using the phone whenever I want without ever considering data usage. So I'm inclined to save the $5/month, but out of principle I almost want to have the option of "unlimited" just in case. I'm really not sure how a faster phone (processor-wise) will change my browsing habits. Half the time I might have used my 3G I just get too frustrated at how long it takes to load and how cumbersome it is. With a faster processor and more RAM, offering a smoother experience, it's possible my data usage will go up. And with true multitasking, maybe even more streaming of audio and stuff. I can't imagine I will ever go over 1GB/month though (don't plan on ever tethering with the current options).

What I don't get is how you get 2GB/month but need to pay more money just to have the ability to tether. And then it just shares the same 2GB limit?! Why not just give us the sme 2GB/month and "free" tethering so we can use that 2GB however we please. If we go over (and you might/probably will with tethering) then you pay more. Seems like a win for AT&T to make more this way (by people paying $10/gb over) vs offering expensive tethering that almost no one will pay for.

Interesting point, maybe they should just do a download limit period. Use it up on your phone or use it up on your computer (with no tethering charge). By doing that, when people realize they can just hook it to their computer they're going to use a ton of data and pay a boatload for the additional GBs.

Then again if they're trying to reduce load on the network as well, this wouldn't necessarily accomplish that, but in terms of actually increasing revenue I'd be interested to see a case study on that.

After talking with the original rep, she's changed her story ("As we get more training on the new plans"). Come 6/7 you will not be able to get the unlimited plan on a new iphone.

This is false, FAN discounts should apply to this as confirmed by an AT&T employee who posted an internal document:

Are These New Data Plans Eligible For FAN Discounting on IRU/CRU Lines?

Yes. IRU discounting is available on the $25 DataPro 2GB plan. CRU discounting is available on the $40 DataPro 2GB for Enterprise plan.

(BTW - IRU = individual paid account. CRU = company paid account)

If this is the case it will be the only thing under 30.00 that qualifies. And the rep I talked to told me that it wouldnt qualify.

Exactly as I said. They'll give you an answer but at&t is still filtering the information down.

grandfathered 2G data plan?

And so what about those customers still using an original iPhone 2G? Do I now have the option of being grandfathered into my $30 unlimited data/1500 txt message plan?

Shoot, these caps do it for me. It's over the top. My wife and I were finally going to switch to AT&T but now were gonna wait for Verizon this Fall.

I'm sure I wouldn't go over 2GB/month but just the fear of the limit would make me not enjoy the phone's abilities.

Heh heh...

Verizon will also implement this pricing and the caps by this fall.

There is no way in hell that AT&T will grandfather the new iPhone - not if it includes a front facing camera that would chew up data like an industrial shredder.

For an example, every time I hit a Boston.com webpage, I pull down roughly 100KB...if I visit/read 10 pages on that site, I've just downloaded 1MB.
Ever heard of a browser cache? Most images, javascript, css, etc. will be cached unless you don't have enough memory or the webmaster is stupid. Assuming only 25% really changes on each page, you used more like 350K, not 1 MB.

Guys, why are you so worried. Here in UAE I have a 1gb limit and I pay for it $40 US. I never run out of mbs. Btw, I use my iPhone to the max. I browse, watch YouTube, and always get my emails. I am even logged in to msn and facebook chat the whole time. I still end up using only 500mb approximately. I even tether to my net book when out.

So consider yourselves lucky out there. A $30 unlimited is an amazing deal. Even the 2Gb option is great and cheap.

Not defending ATT in the least, very unsatisfied with them. But I think many other countries have set it up this way. Not sure though.

Really a ****** move on their part but oh well. :/ Can't bitch too much, we will hopefully be grandfathered in.

Like he'd care. Your bits go right to the trash can.

The same can't be said for Steve Jobs...

And they may get filtered, but not in the Trash. They often have high level customer execs handle any serious issues.

That said, I emailed him and CC'ed SJ.

While I am glad AT&T is finally offering price choices like this I do not agree with the price for each level.

For $15 a month it should be 1 gig, $25 for 2 gigs and $40 for 5 gigs.

If this is the case it will be the only thing under 30.00 that qualifies. And the rep I talked to told me that it wouldnt qualify.

Yea I was a bit skeptical, but my only guess is they are trying to get people on the new plans.

As with other changes, sometimes it takes a few days for all reps to get and read the memos sent out.

Good and Bad

The GOOD: because you only need data when you are off WIFI. The minimum should be enough most months unless doing extended traveling.

The BAD: Jailbreak tethering will be useless for the most part because of the new data limits.

I remember a couple years ago when my friends and I thought a 1 TB hard drive was just insane and pointless. Flash forward to now and it seems kind of limited. 2 GB seems plenty for me right now but who knows what the iphone can do 6 months from now. The iphone is only going to be a data hog as time goes on.. I'm glad I can keep my unlimited plan.
