If the iPhone doesn't leave ATT, I'm just gonna jailbreak and use my iPhone over 3G for EVERYTHING. I will never use WiFi. I'll cost ATT as much money as possible, and give them as little as possible. With the help of Google Voice for texting and unlimited calls, too. Up yours, ATT.

This rumor is so tired.

It does not make sense to manufacture a verizon iPhone. The rest of the world uses GSM. It would need to be a custom design for one carrier. The unit would come at a production premium cost that Apple would not be able to pass off to the consumer. They would make less profit on the verizon model simply to make it available for that one carrier. What is the incentive?

Apple is with AT&T because they want to be. If they wanted to be on another carrier (ANY other carrier), they would be.
Possibly, although you forget that corporations want profit now and not later, which means that if by installing a different radio type in the iPhone now Apple could profit from users on the Verizon and Sprint networks, they will.

There's also a pretty strong case to be made against losing revenue and reputation while the iPhone is stranded with AT&T that Apple has to consider whether or not it outweighs the cost of differentiating the iPhone models by network. I can't imagine that using a CDMA radio to capture Verizon and Sprint customers is going to cost that much more than the current GSM radio in the iPhone - at the end of the day, this is much more a contracts and inventory management discussion than it is a ROI of waiting for LTE discussion. Besides, 4G networks are nascent at best this year - Apple waiting until they become more prevalent (2011 and 2012) because of an issue as small as what kind of radio is in the iPhone doesn't make sense. And besides, aren't they already pushing CDMA radios in to the iPhone for some of the China market (or rumored to be doing so)?

Honestly, if I were Apple, I'd simply release iPhone on all four major US carriers: AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint. People will choose best service and carrier they can afford - in some ways I actually think that iPhone is holding AT&T back, because they can (and have) responded to iPhone users with a shrug and a, "where else you gonna go?" If AT&T had to actually compete for its iPhone users, I posit we'd see a radically different response to their ongoing network problems.

As others have pointed out, the exclusivity contract was much more beneficial earlier on for the iPhone. Now it's just slowing Apple down.

One man's opinion.

After 2 years of really crappy cellular services from ATT, I have come to a crossroads. To quote the CLASH: should I stay or should I go? Well, this is forcing the answer---I, and my family's four iphones will go.

Its all about blocking and tackling, you know, the basis...and ATT just can't seem to get this right. It has been THREE YEARS, THREE YEARS and San Francisco, NYC, siginficant parts of San Diego and even close proximity to Apple's headquarters has issues: WTFIT?

A cell phone is supposed to work, not drop calls multiple times a day from a set location. ATT refuses to get the basics right all the while, Apple creates a kick-ass product. It is like getting a Ferrari and having to keep it in 1st gear all the time. Looks cool, cool apps but it is running on the network from hell.

ATT...I hope some day you get your sh*t together but your performance is mediocre and I am done.

Hello DRIOD and hello Verizon.

Who said that the 5 year contract started the day the iPhone was released? What is if the 5 year contract started the day it was SIGNED?

Could be. We do know that the ATT contract was signed in the summer of 2006.

Who the hell wants a CDMA iPhone anyways, all my calls can go to voicemail while im streaming a podcast sweet!

No, that's not how it works on CDMA. Unlike as happens with GSM EDGE, CDMA phones are set with voice priority over data. So an incoming phone call will always pause data and let you choose whether to answer or not.

What makes you think big red can even handle the load? On top of that, why on earth would someone switch from a network that gives you voice AND data at the same time, to one that only gives you voice OR data but not simultaneously?

Because at least they know that on Verizon they will get a voice or data connection when they want it.

The trouble with sharing the way ATT does it, is that too many voice and/or data users can (and do) cause other voice or data users to be dropped. This is partly because of CDMA cell breathing, something ATT's original TDMA tower layout was not designed to handle.

With Verizon, voice and data are kept on separate channels and thus cannot interfere with each other. Data overload might slow down other data users, but it won't drop the voice users as happens with ATT.

Non COntract

Engadget digs up some 2008 court documents that confirm that Apple and AT&T's original exclusivity agreement did, in fact, extend into 2012. From a court order (PDF):The 5 year timeframe was originally revealed by USA Today back in 2007. A 5 year contract would have maintained AT&T iPhone exclusivity into 2012.

However, at this point, it's not entirely clear if the original contract still stands. The Wall Street Journal reported in 2009 that AT&T's iPhone exclusivity is due to expire this year (2010). Apple and AT&T may have undergone contract revisions and negotiations since that time. Most industry experts seem to believe that AT&T exclusivity comes to an end this year with several whispers that Apple will bring the iPhone to Verizon's network in 2010.

I think Apple should sell it phone not tied up to any contract. It should be open like what they did in Australia

My service is great and i don't care if it's on AT&T. But hopefully this will stop all of those "Iphone coming soon to VZW" threads because unless soon is 2012 it's not happening till then.

And even then we don't know if apple wouldn't renew the contract longer.

Thats not entirely true.

There are phone services in Japan, China, and other developed countries that do use CDMA. So Apple wouldn't be making a CDMA iPhone "just" for Verizon. It would still work worldwide.

Of course, Apple could have done the smart thing from the start and put a combo radio in it that works with both CDMA and GSM, as many Blackberries and other smartphones have.

I like att in my area I have full bars mist of the time, that aside I think apple will go with the current radio standard ( which verizon does not support) so carriers like t-mobile will get the iPhone. I had tmobile in my area and it sucked so it's no concern of mine. Like others have said apple would have to manufacture a different handset and it would be costly. Also apple could of renewed ther contract with the negotiations for iPad. In retrospect the odds for iPhone going to verizon is very little.

This explanation had been a recorded announcement.

Looks like the Droid Incredible for me.

I will not leave Verizon for at&t. I had at&t and it was miserable. It was like having black and white TV, then switching to color with Verizon.

As long as Apple is exclusive to at&t, I will not own an iPhone.

Period.

Regardless what anyone else says, looking at it from an educated position, the iphone will not be coming to Verizon at any time.

As far as the "exclusive contract" at&t has, it only is an agreement for at&t to remain the exclusive GSM carrier for the iphone in the US. Apple sees GSM as being the world standard that makes the most business sense to market exclusively towards.

Many people love to rant about how apple is missing out on a huge customer base not including CDMA in the iphone radio. (for V networks) But, from the beginning when Apple released the 2G iphone, they were making the best choices on marketing the iphone as a world phone - not just a US phone. Since the world standard (for now) is GSM, Apple will not be changing the iphone to cater to Verizon customers.

Just like you have a choice when you purchase a computer, consumers have a choice when they choose a wireless provider as well. Some people like Microsoft, others like apple. Some like Verizon, others like AT&T. There are pros and cons to both depending on what your needs are. Sure AT&T has issues with iphone speeds in some areas where they don't supply a 3G signal, but then again, Verizon just would not have the network bandwidth to support the millions of iphone users that would have been on its network if the iphone was originally designed to be CDMA exclusive. - You can argue this all you want but it is something that even Verizon engineers admit to.

Bottom line, Apple is always looking to the future. For now, GSM brings the best worldwide future market for Apple. Verizon is a great company with exceptional coverage nationwide but with a network that is incompatible with the rest of the world, they fall between the cracks of the international goals Apple has set.

Before you read this please be advised I am only 15.

I have bought the iPhone 2G, and the 3GS. I love these phones. Why would ATT want to get out of there project if there profit is from mainly the iPhone.

Reasons why iPhone will not go to verizon:
1. They got the blackberry, android, and a couple other smart phones.
3. Idk any other reason

With the iPad just releasing, potentially we will be sticking with ATT. If this is true about verizon gaining iPhone, good luck to ATT and get ready to split your salary in half because it just doesn't work like this.

One topic I failed to address was the fact that there are other CDMA carriers in the world. The fact of the matter is, the majority of the worlds cell phone users are on GSM networks.

Remember that Apple went to Verizon a year before they signed with ATT.

Clearly Apple had no intention at the time of being a GSM-only vendor, and was willing to create a CDMA version, just like every other phone maker on the planet.

Being GSM-only is what happened _after_ they couldn't get Verizon to originally take their (undesigned when they first met) phone.

Haha I would never judge you for being 15. I joined when I was 16 so I know what it's like.

However!
I think you're wrong lol.

Verizon wants the iPhone because they know it will bring them new business.
Apple wants the iPhone on Verizon because they know it will bring them new business, too.
The only one stopping it is AT&T, but I think they can only hold out for so much longer.

I honestly don't think Apple would mind creating a CDMA/EVDO iPhone for VZW considering how much business it would bring in.
Plus, didn't I read somewhere that a cross GSM/CDMA chip is in the works?

Qualcom has a single chip that does both GSM and CDMA.

BUT apple did have every intension of being exclusive in their design. What happened cant be changed but if it could, we would be seeing this exact same argument from the other side trying to get Apple to go GSM. However, like I said in my previous post, Apple made the right decision going GSM because they could hit the biggest markets worldwide without having to manufacture more than one device.

30 million current Verizon subscribers and many more who would upgrade earlier in order to jump off AT&T, plus many more who would probably sign up from Sprint and T-Mobile but have been put off by all the horror stories. Yes, AT&T really is that bad. So bad that many, many people who otherwise LOVE the iPhone are either abandoning it, or are strongly considering it just because of the carrier. Tens of millions of potential additional devices is pretty good incentive to make a special CDMA model, even if it is just one carrier (although I think Sprint also uses it, don't they?).

This is not an incentive for Apple to create a CDMA iPhone.

Stupid move. I would NEVER go to AT$T and I really wanted an iPhone but this week got tired of waiting and bought a Droid Incredible and it kick iPhone ass. Apple has waited too long to build it's additional base and now the current phones are catching up or in the care of the Droid Incredible is surpassing them....and that OLED screen is INCREDIBLE!!!

Lol. You never went to AT&T and therefore, we can assume you never had an iPhone either. So how did you conclude the HTC Incredible kicks the iPhones ass? Lol.

Probably because you can't get any other decent phone on Verizon. That's the reasoning more than likely.

Nice try though :D

I am sure if you had an iPhone - you wouldn't be saying that. This is coming from a previous Apple/iPhone hater back when it first came out. Let me share a little secret - people don't rant and rave about the iPhone because it's crap. They rant and rave because it REALLY IS the BEST phone out there. Period. Trust me - it's not all "lies".

Lol. Go give it a try and you will see.

IMO it's iPhone envy that causes most of the belly aching.

This statement would hold water if it wasn't CURRENT AT&T CUSTOMERS doing most of the complaining about the service. So how exactly does "iPhone envy" (whatever that means) play into this?
