"supporting both sub-6Hz and mmWave 5G ..." (not just once, but referenced multiple times...) at 6 Hz, how long to transmit a 256k JPG? Now the Navy can send SMS to subs at depth too...

Birmingham, Pop: 200,000; Average Annual income $30K is getting 5G? I'm glad they're focusing on the big cities that can benefit from the services?!

You do realize this is a general public test bed, where carriers usually start rolling out in smaller cities or towns and acquire feed back to improve for larger urban cities. There is also a factor that telecommunications infrastructure, State laws, contractors etc factor into which cities are easiest to implement for the initial phase.

Give it time it will be rolling out nationwide, by 2021-22 most large urban area will be covered. Whats up with the instant gratification culture, 4G not good enough already. 😜

But people on MR told us it will take years and years until 5g is usable.

And it will. If you take a look at the current implementations from US carriers, either the speed improvement minor or range/coverage is abysmal. It will take years before the promised speeds and coverage of 5G actually are achieved.

There are phones out there that are capable of 5G that aren’t $1000+....
Moto Z4, OnePlus 7 Pro.... 5G isn’t exclusive to the super expensive phones.
Those seem like weak examples. The OnePlus 7 Pro 5G version is $840 and is available only on Sprint. Sprint has 5G network running now? And the Moto Z4, is a $500 phone that is upgradeable to 5G...it doesn't come with it. Who knows how much?

Median household income in Birmingham-Hoover is $53k, compared to $60k for Los Angeles. The Birmingham metro area population is over one million, and banking, healthcare, and construction are major economic drivers. So, contrary to your insinuation, there are many people and industries that can afford and benefit from improved cellular technology. It's also probably easier to deploy 5G in Birmingham than some other, larger cities.

If I were trialing 5G I’d do it in Boise. And then only move to bigger towns when I’m absolutely sure it’s stable.

Anyone remember how in the olden days of 3G AT&T had literal black holes in Manhattan??

No Illinois what's with this Apple.

This is AT&T's cell towers not Apple.

I can see why some of the congested cities have been left off, perhaps due to negotiating for placement of additional cell towers is being held up by landowners wanting more $$$.

7 years after alleged full LTE coverage where I live, one is lucky to get 1 bar of any service much of the time, 5 car LTE service is often oversaturated and slow. At this point, I'd be happy for them to just get their phony "4G" 3G service everywhere, then I could party like it's 2001 with my Palm Treo!

America is really lag in 5G technology comparing with China.
XIAOMI, famous company in China, had released their new Phone Redmi K30 5G days ago, would sell for only $290 in China.

And comes with free tracking software—not to mention your social communist score.
Plus, their job is a lot easier since they let Apple do a lot of their R&D for them.

I would wager because some of those people know that (unlike 1x, 2g and 3g) 4g and 5g are not CTIA industry standard monikers. They are marketing tools to make you think you are getting something wildly superior to LTE. All you are getting - at best - is a lower frequency side band to help in challenging RF environments.

"5G" as wireless and EMC insiders know it, is still years away.

Seems like att is way behind their competitors.

no nyc?
no Chicago?
no Atlanta?
no Boston?
no Seattle?
...etc....

makes me also wonder and much capacity even the launch cities are going to have....
Who cares as long as they cover major cities in CA, haha.

They just launched in more cities today, including mine, but my iPhone 11 Pro doesn’t even show 5ge yet.

I am not sure if you are aware but in China you need your phone for practically most part of your daily life (banking, purchasing, transport, health, schooling, etc), in the United States that is not the case.

I am not sure how others feel about constant surveillance but it has been happening in UK (CCTV), Europe, China, USA, and other places to a limited degree and expanding fast as 5G will make it easier and convenient.

I would prefer the option to turn 5G on/off when I please as I do not need blazing fast speed when using email, texts, or web browsing. I rarely watch videos other than on wifi, so 5G in my situation adds little to no benefit and may reduce battery life.
