SO....

What a SCAM this deal is!!!!

I went and talked with the ATT store yesterday, after circling around his questions and him throwing numbers and info all over the place, I got the facts straight.

If I went to this plan, I would only save the $40ish a month for a few months. This deal is only good UNTIL YOU UPGRADE YOUR PHONE, then it GOES BACK TO THE NORMAL PRICE. And the kicker, BY DOING SO I WOULD LOSE MY UNLIMITED DATA!

Screw ATT!

The facts are on page one of this thread.
And you don't lose the discount as soon as you upgrade.
You lose the discount as soon as you do a subsidized upgrade.
As long as you use Next you can keep the discount.
This whole plan was a way to get people away from subsidized phones and away from unlimited data.
The unlimited data was never unlimited in the first place since you couldn't tether with it so for me, at least, this plan was a better deal.
I get the same amount of data, actually used, for a lower price, and I finally get tethering.
If the plan doesn't work for you then don't switch to it but don't call it a scam just because it isn't what you hoped it would be.

If you save $40 a month for 2 years, that more than covers the cost of subsidy on your next phone. For me we're saving $25 per line on 3 lines. The $600 we save on each line more than pays a new phone.

Agree. We saved $40/month, daughter saved $25/month.

People who call it a scam think, check that. They don't think. Either that, or they don't know what a scam is.

But it is ... The moment you upgrade any phone it jumps to $40/month for that phone, right?

Yeah, traditionally you paid $200 for a $700 phone but you had to agree to stay a customer for two years. And over those two years, AT&T would make back that $500 out of your monthly charges.
Then they came out with the NEXT plan where you paid the entire $700 but broken up into 20 monthly chunks.
Critics said this was a scam because they did away with the $500 discount (subsidy) even though you were paying the same monthly charges.
These new discounted plans were a direct answer to those critics.
You now get a $25/month discount but only if you use NEXT.
Customers who still want the $200 subsidized upgrade can still get it but then they lose the discounted rate plan because that would be a double discount.
Subsidized customers get their discount through a cheaper phone charge.
NEXT customers get their discount through the discounted rate plan.
