Why would anyone:

a)buy an older model of the iPhone when the iPhone 5 is basically a few months away and the 4 has been out for over 6 months

and

b)the one being offered for $49 is the lowest/crappiest one of the iPhone 3GS model

Just spend the $50 and get the $99 iPhone 4 with all the new bells and whistles and performance improvement over the 1.5 year old 3GS.

stupid people can't do math

Yeah . Whats up with the telecom companies in America . you will end up paying close to $1000 for your iphone with the 2 year contract .
They don't even give an option of buying the handset without the contract to the customer !!!
The FCC or someone ought to do something about this .

The FCC needs to investigate AT&T and their mysterious massive uploads of data every night. Check this out:

3GS for $49? In Austria you can get the iPhone 4 for free with a contract. Weak, AT&T, weak.

This is great, but, what about AT&T coming clean with its customers and explain precisely what they're doing with these massive data uploads that occur in the middle of the night

Interesting. I hadn't heard of this. A friend of mine just got an iPhone. He doesn't have a computer nor an Internet connection at home. After two days with his new iPhone, AT&T claimed he had used 386 mb of data and bumped him up to the 2 GB plan. He swears he didn't use his data services that much.

where are you buying an iPhone 4 for 99 bucks?

Its time to get the word out. Ask him to check his account online, and make sure he notes the "Sent" data in the middle of the night when he's asleep... If AT&T is going to send itself, advertisers, whomever.. data, then it should not count against our data-plan limit!

Aside from that, the issue of WHAT are they send and WHOM are they send it to and more..

I read in that Apple forum that attorneys are looking into this. Another class-action for AT&T is likely. They must be so proud of how they do business.

hmmm spend the $50 and get the $99 iphone 4? looks like you'd be spending $99 and not $49 :)

Also, some people don't want a refurb, they want brand new. so they'd then be spending $199. $199 is a huge difference from $49 i'd say...especially if you don't need the latest and greatest.

also, most the people that jump on this don't care if it's the latest and greatest. if they did, they'd already have an iphone 4.

You can actually get the 3GS starting at $19, for a visual blemish version, and the iPhone for starting at $79. It pays to check out at&t Mobility's Website http://wireless.att.com/ because the deals are sometimes incredible.

Actually, that is how I got my iPhone 4 for $249.

AT&T today announced that, effective tomorrow, it will lower the price of the 8 GB iPhone 3GS to $49 from the current $99 price point.

most of the people that will buy with an upgrade won't be someone who would buy it off of ebay. the main buyer's on ebay are people not in a contract. if they buy from AT&T outright it would cost them around $400-$500 with no contract pricing.

I'm not entirely sure I understand what you mean. I had bought a 3GS phone too late to be eligible for an early upgrade through AT&T. I was ready to wait another year because the 3GS was a nice phone, it didn't need replacing.

When I heard that RadioShack was buying 3GS phones back I took mine in to see what I could get for it. The phone was in perfect condition so they told me they would pay the maximum amount they could. I used that to purchase a full priced iPhone 4 through Radioshack. It worked out being slightly more expensive than an early upgrade and significantly cheaper than just upgrading.

My friend sold his jailbroken iPhone on EBay because he thought he could get more for it. He got slightly more but after the time required to mail the phone and the postage it worked out to be about the same.

Point being, though, that with $49 3GS phones on the market I don't think anyone is going to be able to get $200+ for their used 3GS anymore.

In just 6 months the iPhone 4 will no longer be the newest iPhone either.

What make you think it's AT&T initiating the "mysterious massive uploads"?
They have no way to initiate a data upload from any iPhone.

They can only send data to the phone, VVM and MMS are a good examples of a data push to the phone.

I believe the question needs to be directed at Apple.

If this indeed is true, then the problem must be with AT&T, because mine has a total upload of 196 MB for about six months, and I'm pretty sure that's all me.

not just anyone can call up AT&T and get the $49 price. you need to be due for an upgrade/add a line/new line of service. many of the people that buy the used one's on ebay aren't eligible to get it for $49 OR they don't want to get stuck in a contract.

I'm not sure i understand your situation. if you could mention prices of what you paid it would help.

Read that forum. Check your usage. Its happening. There is no question about it. Do a google search:

You dont even need to type too much as Google will prefill those words for you because its already an indexed topic since June 2010 when they changed their plan structures.

AT&T is pulling, sending, retrieving (whatever verb you want to use) data from the iPhone in the middle of the night. Doesnt matter if you set WIFI on, once you put the phone to sleep, the 3G connectivity comes back to life.

Typical answer from AT&T is to ask Apple. Apple doesnt run the network. AT&T has no idea what they're talking about.

I dont know why you're questioning IT when you should be concerned about WHY its happening...

I hope that means they're discontinuing it.
It's a bit irresponsible to keep selling the 3GS now that it won't even get software updates till the end of the contract.

They kept selling the 3G till summer of 2010, and it will not even get iOS 5 this summer (and maybe not even security updates after that). There are going to be plenty of angry customers. Better avoid that this year.

Maybe it will mean:
iPhone 4 8GB 99$
iPhone 4 32GB 199$
iPhone 4 64GB 299$

They've upgraded the storage of the 2G in January, too. They might be doing it every 18 months.

Airplane mode. Problem solved. Now please, stop with your shenanigans.

wow - $49 for an iphone - seems amazing - on the surface at least - yes I know its for a 3gs - but still - they still sell old brick "dumb phones" by Tracfone for that same price

WHO are they sending the data to?
WHAT data are they sending?
WHERE is it going?
WHY are thy only sending huge chunks of data at night? Billing reconciliation shouldnt cost users 20 to 50 to even 100 MBytes per night.

I haven't had this problem at all. I suspect you may have some app installed which is doing this.

I'm more than halfway into this current billing period and my phone has only sent a total of 31.3MB. I can also account for most of that. Since not everyone is having this issue I'm betting it's a misbehaving app, or a compromised (jailbroken?) phone.

Not everyone needs the latest and greatest. My mom would like to have an iPhone, but she wouldn't used half of the features that the latest model offers. Just because the 4 is newer doesn't mean it's worth buying.

You can't seem to get these seals if your upgrading. My mother is on an old 3 year old Sony Ericsson Walkman and am looking to upgrade her to an iPhone. saw those prices on the website, went into the account to do an upgrade, and they only offer new or a refurb 3Gs for $49 (I assume tomorrow they may go down), so no luck. Was planning on the 16 GB iPhone 4 for $99 as it would allow facetime with her grandchild in AZ. Now I am waiting to see what happens tomorrow.

The logic in that argument that AT&T is doing it is flawed.
Why only a few people and why only during the middle of the night?
I suspect it's an app the user installed that is doing it.

AT&T can't make your phone send data.
And if they did manage to do it, they couldn't charge you for any of the usage since it would be provider initiated traffic.
Much like VVM, which uses the data network to download the messages, you are not charged for that data transfer.

Way too many people out there with their tin foil hats on a bit too tight.

No. Not jailbroken though now I feel like doing so to gain full control and maybe install a firewall, (if possible).. Its not a runaway App when you can easily do a google search and see that AT&T sends you to Apple who sends you back to AT&T and then AT&T finally posts an official response embedded within page at:
http://gizmodo.com/5599621/those-nighttime-iphone-downloads-are-actually-not-downloads

The thing is, I and others *are* being charged for their nightly uploads.

However, I realize this is not the thread for this sort of stuff and I apologize for starting in with it.
