Anyone care to list the phones apart from the iPhone that aren't already 3G?

Their entire line of Crackberries for one. That's the huge one, in fact. AT&T has already said a 3G Blackberry is coming early Summer, that's not really a secret.

hmm october u say?
i really dont care if he lied or not... (maybe the lawyer really is that stupid to reveal strictly confidental information, what would ruin his carreer)

but ur information is worth nothing even if it should be the truth, because the info is way too old. 2007... production accelerates or slow downs it can change the expected release date by months....

btw i dont think that a edge version will be avaiable after the 3g realease.
production cost would only increase by offering 2versions.
a redisign isnt likely as well... only refined. but the actual design is nice and i guess we will maybe see in 2009 a completely new design but not yet not that early.

i am looking forward what other new features will be integrated into the iphone. actually i dont care much about 3g, because wether i have it or not i am not gonna use it.
for me inet via a mobilephone is just way 2 expensive. so i hope the other features may not be that great that i will regret my 16gb iphone purchase.

well, you're right by being suspicious. I actually had this information for a while and am a long time reader of these forums, but was always too lazy to sign up, being I had nothing contributing to say except for this. But then I saw a poster writing that he needed advice on which HDTV to buy, and I have the particular one that he talked about, and felt I could steer him into the right direction. I had no homework, so I signed up. I figured, since I'm already signed up why not tell these guys what im 90% sure what the release window will be, due to the fact I have a source, and my information could really help some people out (like the people debating whether or not to buy an iphone right now).

OK. You're not a liar. You're just extremely gullible. Or clueless. Or FOS, and your cousin is the actual liar. If you actually believe that Apple, possibly the most successfully secret computer company out there, outsources patent applications so that weak links can tell their high school cousins, then I've got a barely used bridge to sell you.

Why I think it will hit the shelves in the month of June.

Well if the reason for iPhone shortages aren't answered by the roll out of a new iPhone, which btw would be amazingly unorthodox product release by Apple, then June is exactly the month I'm going with. Here are a few reasons why:

1. Stimulated Consumers. I'm inclined to believe that Apple, just like any other consumer products company, is itching to reach consumer's discretionary income in the wake of congressionally approved stimulus checks.

2. Asia 2008. Apple's need for a 3G phone is practically a necessity to be competitive in some Asian markets (ie Japan). And would fall in line with Jobs stated goal of Asia 08'.

3. Market Share & Sales by EOY 2008. A lot of public attention (investors, consumers, media) is going to be centered and paying very close attention to what the iPhone number results are by the end of 08. Simply because Jobs set the bar up for this time frame at the initial iPhone keynote. In other words, the sooner an Apple phone rolls out that reaches an even greater market share the better. Apple and analysts would be able to do nothing more than speculate on how this thing would sell in 2009 if this new iPhone hit the shelves in November.

4. SDK = Newer software = more demands on current hardware. In the wake of Apples SDK, we shouldn't overlook the fact that the apps currently released by Apple have been worked and refined and optimized to the Nth, to run as smoothly as possible given iPhone's current hardware. I would imagine many of the new 3rd party apps may push the iPhone to hardware limitations that are going to be very visible to the consumer. So in that sense a new iPhone makes sense to roll out officially side by side the SDK and iTunes App Store.

Now an official announcement may come much sooner than June. but I do believe that this thing will hit the shelves in June.

he did say couple of months before that. but it wasn't a direct quote from gizmodo.

regardless, the implication is clear. he was in conversation, it's going to be soon.

arn

arn,

Do you think that Apple will continue to sell the 2.5G iPhone alongside the 3G iPhone - or do you think they'll just sell the new model??

The only reason I can think of for Apple continuing to sell the 2.5 version along with the 3G version is to not lock themselves out of potential sales in areas where 3G is not available via AT&T. Other than that I can't see why else Apple would want to continue to sell the old model.

I think Apple would want to keep in line with the one size fits all product line up. (with slight variations in specs , ie hard drive space etc) but then again this is the cellphone market so who knows. I think Nokia has 100's of models out lol.

3G chips roll back to EDGE when 3G is unavailable.

I hope apple doesn't make too many iphones and just sticks with a few distinctive models like their computer line. Even 2 iphones is enough. More is just greedy.

I'm sure your cousin, who must work at a Vault 100 firm, violated confidentiality to tell you this information. Right.

Just to avoid any confusion, I am calling you a liar.

My cousin works for a new york law firm, whose name I don't want to give out. and its not like he sat down and gave me a scematic of the iphone. I asked him when its coming, he said this time 1 year from now. I asked him if this meant october, he said yes. He also told me about the multi-touch technology in devolopment, much like the stuff in minority report.

Look, I don't know how deep he is, how valid that info was, etc. but I do know that he said this to me, and i never said anything other than that.
Therefore, I am not a liar. and if you still think i am, keep it to urself.

It's going to be June. I am almost sure. Developers will have plenty of time to develop apps and the iPhone will have their first anniversary. WWDC seems to be the appropriate place for that.

I hope they have a 32gig version for $499, 16gig for $399 and 8gig for $299.

I know this was not addressed to me, but if I may, it seems very "unapple" to have one product line with two completely different technical standards. Generally, once they roll out an update, the old models disappear and the new ones take their place.

My guess is October...always believed it to be October (well, November, but I'll take October :p).

I mean, they already let the 16 GB out...now they're gonna release a 3G version only four months after that? It's not like it's a simple memory upgrade...Some people are gonna be  and  and  again but mostly .

New Country Launch?

Anything before June wouldn't make sense in my mind, but how do you explain the lack of inventory? After the iMac transition to Intel supply chain fiasco, I can't imagine Apple would cut production this short.

The only logical hypothisis I can come up with is they are planning a new country launch and need to build inventory. What major Asian countries are EDGE only? Thailand and Malaysia come to mind... but are India and China 3G yet?

Knowing Apple, they would live to milk sales of the EDGE phone as much as possiblebefore the 3G launch..

well i guess ur cousin is going to bleed for it if it should be the truth...
i hope u know that companies do have people searching in forums and posting to influence and research people.
and even without saying the companies name an apple worker would know it which lawyer it was.
that might be the worst case scenario... ur cousin is pretty stupid for a lawyer or should i say u are stupid to reveal this informations just to show off.

iphone2

I'm starting to think that the 3G iPhone may be a separate smaller update from "iPhone2", with a 3G/Asia announcement coming in June alongside the AppStore/Enterprise release.
A suped-up thinner, possibly wider, iPhone2 may not come until the end of the year or possibly early 2009.

Fans (not to mention Apple engineers and marketeers) have enough on their plate with Apps!/Enteprise and 3G, without mixing in a brand new device.

What about 4G?

Let me trow another thought... Why aren't we hoping for a decent device with 4G? My current telecomoperator does not invest in 3G but goes for 4G in the (very?) near future.
In the past Apple did manage it to use superfresh technologies in its products to just take the lead. Apple doesn't look like an engine anymore, but tends to be something like a tender, not?

Ok so dont believe me if u don't want to, just dont call me a liar, my cousin is a lawyer who writes patents, and lucky for me, one of his clients is apple (he actually helped write the multi-touch for more than two fingers patent, and told me about it before it was patented. he says it will be like the technology they show in "Minority Report.") He told me the next iPhone will be in October 08.
This was in october 07 that he told me, so I don't know how valid this is. But if June isn't the month, you heard it here first, October.

yeah.. okay.. move along pal.. april fool's day is over!!
:D

nope.. 3g not here yet (India), but last i heard, china was still 2.5 but were going straight to 4g. not sure.

Sweeeeeet! Come onnnnn CDMA iPhone announcement as well haha a guy can dream cant he?
CDMA? Sorry, no way! If Apple wanted to make a CDMA phone, they would have done so last year.
This isn't possible, there will be an FCC report released on the 3G iPhone's technical/wireless performance probably months, maybe weeks, before it begins going on sale in the United States.
I corrected the error for you. A FCC approval is not needed for sale in other countries, such as Japan. ;)
Although I don't think Apple will do this, it is possible that in June they'll introduce the UMTS iPhone in Japan, where the EDGE iPhone does not work, and later in the US and other countries that already have an iPhone.

How large and heavy does he want the iPhone to be? What does he want to do with it, given that there are currently no 4G networks in commercial service?

Say:
EDGE 16GB - $399
3G 8GB - $399
3G 16GB - $499
My WAG is that Apple will just obsolete EDGE and price the 3G phones at US$100-$150 over the corresponding iTouch (which is close to your prices). Since we have a 32GB iTouch, it makes sense for Apple to release a 32GB iPhone (and, who knows, maybe we'll even see a 64GB iPhone). And, so, I'll guess that a 32GB V2 iPhone could possibly be around US$599-$650.

(I'm saying possibly "$150" more, because of possible new features, like the rumored GPS.)

The real question is, "What will AT&T's 3G rates be?". I'd hate it, but I wouldn't be surprised if the 3G plans cost more than the current EDGE ones.
