AT&T must have an awesome network!

Now that I got your attention I'm going to try to sell Viagra! Just kidding, serious question/discussion

My brother upgraded to a 3gs a few months ago and gave me his 1g Iphone to use as an iPod touch. It took about a second for me to decide to drop the Sprint instinct and turn on the 1g with no contract. My plan is to wait until Steve Jobs descends from the hill in June to bestow upon us the next shiny thing before signing a contract. I am amazed at what the 1g can do! Cant wait for the HD/g4

This and my iPod nano are my first apple products. Are they all this awesome!? I think I need to toss my PC and upgrade, any tips on a good entry level Mac? I'm becoming Gollum like attached to my precious (err I mean Iphone).

Here is my question. I wasn’t kidding when I said that they must have an amazing network (Dallas TX). My 1g is much faster than my 3g sprint instinct was. Is that because my phone is the Apple equivalent of a members only jacket? Am I the only one still left on the 2g (or is it edge?) network and therefore have it all to my self? Are they different networks?

What do you think the odds are of the Iphone being made available in the US with Verizon / sprint / T-Mobile / ect? If they do get the Iphone wont that free up a lot of bandwidth for the people that stay with AT&T? I just cant understand how they can deal with all of that traffic now. Am I correct in thinking that sharing the load with big red will help everyone?

PS, no hatin on my 1g, I have to keep it Grey Powelled in a secret case to keep from getting laughed at by thugs with pocket protectors.
 
my honest impression is iPhone will remain an AT&T exclusive product until at the earliest Q4 2010 latest Q2 2011.

Other than that I am impressed with your 1G speed. And your future plans for when the iPhone HD comes out are practical.
 
As with most anything Apple, it's really hard to say when the iPhone is going to go non-exclusive in the US, but each year the odds of it happening become greater and greater, so I guess this year they're more likely than ever to do it. :D

That said, even if they do, I'm sticking with AT&T. Here in Iowa, they've really been beefing things up, and service is much much better than it was when I got my 3G almost 2 years ago. They've turned on the 3G in the first place, and starting about a month ago I've been getting some crazy speeds on it. At this point its not uncommon for me to get over 2Mbps down/300kbps up, and things will probably get even better when they turn on the 7.2 HSPA stuff.

As for the speeds you're getting, EDGE tops out at 200 kbps (I think), so even at max speed you're not going to be putting much stress on the towers. Just wait until you have 3G, even a low 3G data rate will blow you away ;)
 
I assume that even if they open up to other carriers it wont be that day. Looks like I will be with AT&T for 2 years. It doenst seem bad to me but maybe when I graduate up to the level everyone else is at.. who knows.

Um,, OK. Maybe you should read it before being a jerk. The thread was exactly related to the title. I am impressed with the network even in an outdated phone (Iphone 1g) and am wondering if the reason for this is because I have an outdated devise and less users to compete with.

I will try to abandon all lame attempts at humor in the future. Or just ignore rude people.... hummm

Personally, this thread seems a little immature. The poster with the initial "hook" was not needed, and made me think of him as a pre-teen.

I'll be the first to say congratulations on the new find.

Yeah, maybe he does at the END, but like I said, I didn't read past a few sentences before getting irritated. And reading the entire thread, it has so many topics that I can't even decide what title I'd give it.

"any tips on a good entry level Mac?": Depends on how much money you have. I'd get a low end, refurb MBP or a low end refurb iMac (both which can be had for $800-1,000), depending on whether you want be able to transport it around or not.

No, no, yes (if you're referring to the EDGE vs. 3G, if you're asking about 2G and EDGE, they're the same, but some would call the EDGE the 2.5G network....see Java6454 posts.

@Aggie. Thanks! I appreciate your answers. Sorry I got a little to defensive. Is their any reason for a neophyte user to bother with the high end mac book? Its not really a money issue but since I pretty much just use my home computer for entertainment, would I even be able to use the advance features, or are those only useful for graphic design people?

OK, I am not a preteen but I admit after reading my post their mayyy have been one to many lame jokes, sorry. I honestly am over excited about my "new" Iphone (should I call it a 1g or 2g?). With how fast and amazing this one is over Sprints 3g I cant wait to see the new one.

One more question.. What is your fav site to find / review new apps?

I notice there are a lot of fellow Texans on this page.. Nice!
