I just got off the phone with AT&T, they told me that I have a remaining balance of ~$90 because the iPhone is available 1 month prior to the previous years iPhone. She told me that I could not pay off the balance over the phone and that I'll need to visit an AT&T store to pay off the balance and then request an exception to remain in ownership of my device until I get the new iPhone. Does this story check out? Is anyone else figured out how to make themselves upgrade eligible before Friday at 12:01a PT?

When I got the iPhone 7 Plus, my 6 plus was on next. I was able to just call them and make a payment over the phone for the amount needed to get me to upgrade early. Then I could either keep the phone for the extra pay off amount or send it back to them.

Go online and pay off the remaining balance- prob $95.70 like the rest of us. You will have to check a box and agree to send the phone back within 14 days of your new phone shipping. ATT should email you a return label once your new phone ships. Return the old phone- either in store (I did this last year but the store reps are clueless) or by mailing back.

You do not have to request an exception.
Hope this helps.

I got told the same thing- that I can't pay it over the phone and thought that was a bunch of hooey but now I see she was correct. Now to decide on the phone.

Thank you for this.

If I follow these steps, does it mean I have to order the new iPhone from AT&T or can I order from Apple?

Is it different for att next 30 month pay plan? When I check if I can upgrade I’m getting that I have to pay the $633 balance before upgrading.

Am I also able to pay a 12th installment($33.34) and trade in?

Yep, I paid mine off a few weeks ago, and was good to go on launch day. Now I just have to figure out the process for trading in, which I have never done before. Do I go to a store after I activate the new phone and hand it in?

In my experience, the store trade in hasn’t worked. They always tell me I have to mail it in because I purchased the new phone from an Apple store & after the info & activation was done at Apple , they can’t resubmit or something. Not sure how accurate that is, but it’s happen twice. So now I just always plan to mail in.

Someone else may be able to chime in on this, but I’m assuming if it’s from an AT&T, you can do the trade in there.
