Yeah as far as I can tell there is a $20 upgrade fee. It's absurd really and rubs me the wrong way. Heck they just started doing it last year and it was $15. Already moved to $20.
Yep, that was originally one of their selling points for Next (as opposed to the subsidy). No activation fee and a service fee discount. Now none of those things are really true. It's no wonder people are so confused about Next.

Hey everyone.

I have a 6s & it's my first time being with Next. Last year, I literarily walked into an apple store, signed up there & received the phone. I'll be eligible to upgrade (most likely not planning to pay the phone, opting to do the trade in)

Does anyone know how the trade in process works? Can I return the phone to any at&t store?

Is it possible to get the 7 from apple & then return the 6s. (would they need the 6s back before I can get the 7?)

Would appreciate any advice. Thanks

Apple Upgrade Program obviously checks your credit score and gets you a hard hit on your report.

What about ATT Next? If you're already an ATT customer, do they do a hard hit on your credit too?

Thanks!

When I signed up for Next they didn't do a credit check. I think if you're already a customer, they don't. (I'm signed up for have automated payments. I don't think that makes a difference, but there was no credit check)

Has anybody had the activation fee waved by asking? I just chatted with an ATT rep and they said upgrading from a next plan to another next plan you can get it waved.
Att used to charge 35$ or something to upgrade lines when there was subsidies but you could always call and have them waved.

So I've heard with the Apple upgrade program they require you to go to an Apple store to pick up your phone, even if it's your first time signing up with the program and don't have a device to trade into them. What I'm curious about is if I order online tonight and choose AT&T Next, does that require me to pick up my phone with AT&T or will they just ship it to me directly with no need to go into a store?

What if you return the device you buy at Apple.com via NEXT? Do you return to Apple or ATT and do you get Apple's return policy or does NEXT lock you into ATT's policy with return fees?

depends where you buy it. buying it through apple return through apple. Buying through ATT return through att. shouldn't be any return fees you have 14 days.
I might end up ordering the jet black on a new line and deciding which one i like better in person before returning

If you pre-order via the Apple Store app and choose AT&T Next, is it possible to pay with an Apple Gift card? If you choose one of the Apple payment options, is it possible to pay the monthly payments with an Apple Gift card? I gave my wife a $200 gift card for her birthday last month to use towards a new phone and that was before I learned that 2-year contracts with subsidized phones are now a thing of the past, at least with AT&T. Been out of the loop since we're just coming to the end of our contract and are trying to be prepared for the 3AM preorder.

Thanks I just wasn't sure if you'd get the ATT restocking fee since technically it's ATT billing you on NEXT, not Apple.

FYI
I was already on NEXT and didn't get charged an upgrade fee. My wife was not yet on NEXT and got charged $20.

Interesting. I also got charged an upgrade fee (which I will call and get waived) because I paid off my current next contract. Maybe if you are upgrading you don't get charged but if you are starting a new agreement then you do.

I'm currently enrolled in the IUP with my 6s, but opted for AT&T Next this time around, does anyone know how I go about giving this phone back to Apple? Will they send me a box to ship it back in?

If you were on the upgrade program and went to next then you're still on the hook with citizens one to pay off your remaining balance. Find a place to sell your current phone and pay off your citizens one balance. Or you could pay off the balance and keep your 6s

I think that's what it is. I recently paid off a NEXT plan and tonight I started a new one for the 7 Plus. Got charged the $20 fee. AT&T never ceases to amaze me with how greedy they are!

Ohhhh crap okay. The FAQ on Apple's website said you don't have to re-enroll if you didn't want to. It said you could just purchase an iPhone at full price or use carrier financing, but I'm guessing they meant after 24 months.

It seems third party sellers like Apple or Best Buy return policy don't apply when you use NEXT. The fine print says you're still subject to ATT's $35 restocking fee which truly sucks. Glad I didn't order with next this time.

Doubly strange because I paid off my next installments yesterday. No fee.

I went with the ATT option as I didn't want to have to make a reservation and go into the store. Also I did the math and even with Apple Care Plus they are both pretty darn close.

Apple Upgrade program 7plus 128GB = (41.58 * 24) - 129 = $997.92
ATT Next Plan 7plus 128GB = (36.21 * 24) + 129 = $998.04

There's only a 12 cent difference between the price.

I paid off my next a few months ago, and I didn't get charged the fee either as I started a new next with the iPhone 7plus.

So it really doesn't matter what you go for then correct?

I'm due for an upgrade. Previously I've just been on the 2 year contract deal with AT&T.

I'm just not sure if getting Apple Care is worth it. $41 seems a lot more per month than $37.

It just looks that way to the eye. Not sure what to do.

bumping this since it seems to be the most talked about topic regarding what i wanted to know what did majority go with? someone mentioned about not being able to put anything down to lower the payments on IUP but what about ATT next? did anyone confirm they can put cash down on ATT next and their payments would decrease? IIRC ATT was giving more on past trade-ins compared to apple so that may be another factor for me.

On AT&T, yes you can put in down payment.

If you're only putting in $200 down or something though, that's just ~$8/mo less. Personally, if I were going to put in a sizable down payment anyway, I'd rather just pay cash in full.

thanks. that's somewhat my intention. hopefully i get a good trade in for my iP6 and i'll be putting down at least $200 in cash up front (maybe more) but don't mind the difference of the payment to my monthly bill but as i do with my truck payment - I put more towards the principle. though the car method doesn't lower my payment but curious if it does with ATT next. i'd like the option of getting a new one after 12 months but if i don't like it - i'll hang onto it.
