I went to upgrade to the 5, and since they had none in stock they had to order one. They said it would be shipping to my house, brand new. And when I get it, I can bring it in and they set it up.

I might be wrong, but I always assumed that all iPhones were unlocked until they were activated by AT&T to their network to be locked? Or do they come pre-locked?

And if they do come unlocked originally, couldn't I technically keep this iPhone 5 and have an unlocked iPhone? They don't seem to care what phone I'm going to be using on the plan, since the number we're having for this iPhone 5 will be on a 3GS and so they're making us a regular sim for that, instead of giving us a micro for the 5.

Just curious, would the iPhone 5 that is coming to my house be unlocked if I don't bring it to an AT&T store?
